Default xxx-sct getting hot

From what i have read and seen this seems to be an on going problem. My son-in-law got a new sct out of the box and first race( with stock gearing) everything got hot. It melted the coils going to the motor and motor was so hot that we couldn't even touch it. Does anyone know what this problem is? And does anyone know how to fix this problem? We ended up taking coils off and put in a 17 wind regular brushed motor and now runs great, but there seems to be a problem with the box setup.

Yes, it does seem to be a problem with a lot of guys. You're correct in cutting out the coils, if you don't they just melt anyway. Cut mine off but it still gets fairly hot. I think it was Adam Drake who said the XXX is geared fairly tall, might try dropping down the gearing a little bit so it doesn't have to work as hard. I've cut out the 2 fans in the back and a hole in the windshield for some airflow, but I'm starting to think that the motor's the problem. What 17 turn motor did you go to ?

Not sure on the brand of motor he got but it is just a reg. modified brushed motor. Still running the same esc and not having the problem any more. So I don't know if it's the motor or what but it seems to me thats were the problem lies. The only other thing he did was cut out the slot in the hood scoop for a little airflow. I wouldn't think that little slot in the front would make difference, I think it's the motor wont handle it. He has no prob. with it at all now it runs around 120-130 degrees with excact same gearing with no problem. We did eliminate the coils also, they was melted beyond any hope at all. Not sure which spur he running now but he borrowed my 86 spur the other night and don't know if he's tried to run it and not sure the box stock spur but will find out. The only other problem he has had is not motor related but a younger kid jumped across track and hit him on the landing and broke his front bulk head but thats not a problem with truck, that could/would happen to any truck. We replaced it with a xxxt graphite and is doing great.

The inductors (melting coils) are there for some european regulation. They don't work and we recommend they be cut off right away. Not sure what the regulation is all about but they could not get around it so they are there.

The kit motor works great. There will be some not so great ones out there as that is the nature of the beast when dealing with this style of motor.

Cut the inductors off and solder everything straight to the motor and you should be good with the kit motor.

Casper, I've got another post on here about the cr/sct conversion. If you could, can you read it and give me some info on that subject as well. I would appriciate it.

I just got my XXX-SCT about a month ago and not only did I have this same problem, my throttle never had any variable control. No matter how gently I squeezed the trigger, it would go directly from 0 to 100% throttle. It got about 2 days of racing, 3 x 5min quals + 1 x 8 min main before the electronics completely failed and the truck stopped working. I had to splice solder the motor wires after the very first run because the "inductors" literally melted away. The longest run time it had was 15 minutes during a practice session and I could literally smell the burning electronics as my car drove past the drivers stand. I ran a 2Sx20Cx5A lipo in it, same as 7 other RC cars I own and I have never experienced anything like this before.

Fortunately, Horizon has honored my warranty claim, but now I wonder if the replacement ESC and motor (currently on back order) will also fail...

Has Losi improved their motor since the truck was manufactured, or did I just get bad electronics out of dumb luck?

So the inductors really do nothing at all?
