Ok, just bought a new RTR truggy and I swapped in a stock .28 out of a RTR that my buddy ran about 6 tanks through. Keeping my new one for a nice new spare!! Said it ran great, he just upgraded to the O.S Racer. I'm fairly knowlegable about tuning, but my issue is I can't keep this thing cool. I have it real rich, "it seems" But after about a 1/4 to 1/2 tank of horsing around the temps contiue to climb past 275*. I am checking it with a portable gun and the Remote. They both are pretty close. It helps a little with the body off, but not much.
I'm almost thinking of putting my "NEW" motor back in and just break it in and try it.
Any ideas??
New to the forum, hope to learn a few tricks and exchange some info!

Look for airleaks

It sounds like a classic case of being lien on the top and fat on the bottom. I bet your idle needle is in real far to keep your engine running even though your low speed is too rich. Your low speed setting is masking your lien high speed needle.
Richen the top and lien the bottom. You will have to lower your idle after you make these adjustments.

Thats what I was kinda thinking, I'm going to mess with it some more tomorrow. I was doing some searching on here and some guys were talking about adding the shim that comes with the RTR to compensate for the 30% fuel.
Also, is the pinch test still the best way to get the low speed dialed in. 2-3 onethousand idle up a bit then die??

I see many people using the pinch method. I don't have a problem with it. I tune by ear, so I don't use that method myself, but I know it works for a lot of people.
I'm not sure what engine your running other than a .28, but you need to measure your deck hight before you add a shim. You might not even need to add a shim. Get your tune right and then make that decision. If your temp keeps going up slowly, your tune is not that far off. Back your high speed out a couple of hours and go in on your low speed a couple of hours. When you hear your engine idle speed go up, your heading in the right direction. Back your idle needle out as needed to lower the idle down as you go. Keep repeating if needed until you get it right.

well, It got a little better tonight. But still feel I am way off. I think I will try to use the factory settings on the carb and tune from there.

wow, the settings were way off compared to factory ones. My LHS was 3.5 turns out, and LSN was 1.25 out. So, I'm eager to rip it tomorrow, should run totally different. My manual said 2.5 turns out is a base setting for the 454. Hopefully it will be close. I probably should have checked the motor before I put it in. Maybe thats why my friend pulled it out..lol had it all messed up!!
