Hello Everyone,
I am here to help answer any questions related to Losi Electric Off-road vehicles. I am also pretty versed in 1/8 Nitro Off-road and will help the best I can with that.

Hi Matt,
I was wondering if you could post your set up for the XXX-4. I recently started racing 4wd, but I haven't been able to find any current set ups. Also, what type of track condition is your set up for? I typically race on a loose dirt or loamy track. Thanks!
Matt Chambers
09-01-2009, 03:39 PM
I dont have my setup written down or in PDF format but I found one that is really close.
http://losi.com/ProdInfo/Files/travis-06.pdf
The only difference between that setup and mine is I use a front differential and steel LCD's. My car is setup for tracks with medium bite and smooth surfaces.
Some things you might try for loamy/loose traction:
Front one-way (if you need more steering entering and more front drive exiting the corner)
Use Anti squat in the rear (try 1 degree first-- this should make the rear of the car squat and give better forward traction... if that's still not enough try 3 degrees).
Other than that maybe try a yellow spring in the rear.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Matt
yo matt,
why are you so fast? you think you could slow down or just remove a front tire so i have a chance at keeping up?lol just kidding......
shock oil at mhor...what do you run front and rear....i forgot :(
thanks for all your help all the time!

Lots of practice and experience I guess!
I have been running 30wt/56 pistons in the front and 25wt/57 in the rear when the track is newer (looser). When it gets high bite and we start running slicks I usually go up 2.5-5wt front and rear to slow the cars weight transfer down.

Hi matt, What is the differece with the left arm on the right side and vice versa? What changes would you make to run the car on carpet?
Thanks
Matt Chambers
09-07-2009, 10:24 PM
Daniel- flipping the arms changes the inboard toe. I am not sure exactly how much toe it adds but I believe it is only 1 or 2 degrees.
I have only ever driven my xxx4 on offroad so i'm not the best person to ask about that but if I had to guess I would suggest the following changes:
Lower ride height front and rear
plastic diff outdrives front and rear
thicker shock oil
rear hubs in back position
stiffer springs front and rear
I suggest these things under the assumption that you are on "hi-bite" carpet. If you can give me more details on the track surface and your current setup I can offer more advice :)

Sup Chambers?
I just signed up on here to keep an eye on the fastest guys in Colorado... :D
You were right about the D2- On hold, I'm out of 2wd till next year unless I pick up Addy's Losi.
Congrats  on the Thread... I know it's gonna be work for you guys!
Matt Chambers

30- yeah you might as well grab his car for the winter! Racing electric always helps make 1/8 scale seem that much easier when you go back to it. And what about Addy??? I thought we were gonna see old Pigeon at MHOR this winter? Either way hope you guys make it out there... Maybe we can race some Strike's :)
thanks about the thread... It's cool having a public forum to help people out. I think Losi did something really good by starting it. It's great feedback for losi and for the consumers.

For a track like ARCOR do you have a good set up for the XXXTcr and AD2?
Matt Chambers
09-12-2009, 11:39 PM
Silver- I only remember running gas truck at ARCOR once a few years ago... I didn't write down the setup I ran. Looking at some of the available setup sheets on the Losi site I came across one of Adam's setups... It looks pretty close to *what I remember* running. I think it would be a really good starting point. Try it out and if you need it to do something better let me know and I'll try and offer some advice.
http://losi.com/ProdInfo/Files/The-Dirt-05.pdf
As far as the XXXTCR setup I would start off with my standard setup. You might play around with the washers on the rear hub carrier. Again, let me know what you want the truck to do different/better and I can give you some tips.

Definetly looks hi-bite! The things I suggested before should help the handling of your car and if you need more steering consider trying a one-way.

Matt, just wanted to thank you again for the help with Jason's XXX4 at trackside this weekend. It sure was great having you, Dustin and Dakota at the Spektrum race to help us Losi owners. Your attitude, willingness to help and friendly disposition is a credit to your character and Team Losi. I hope you enjoyed the event as we really enjoyed having you there and watching you race.
I am hoping you will be able to post your setup sheets for the XXX, XXXT and XXX4 that you used at Trackside. It would be great to refrence your setup and Dustins as your vehicles performed very well and typically us Losi guys are sort of on our own at Trackside.
Hope to see you again soon, Keith and Jason.

I second that, thanks for the generosity and everything. Dustin winning, and showing them associated isn't the only way to go was even better yet. :D Like Kieth said, us Losi guys are the under dogs there because they cater to the associated guys. We couldn't have asked for any better attitudes, or friendlyness. Wish you were closer, it was fun having you, and I hope you can do it again next year. Besides, Dustin needs to defend his titles. Oh, and man for 12 years old Dakota knows how to get around. Wish I had half that talent. I couldn't find Dustin on here for some reason, so let him know our appreciation please.

Hey Matt,
I'm a noob to off-road, but I have some experience in mini-z and I fly electric heli. I just purchased an XXX-CR from Chad and Jess a couple weeks ago up at MHOR, along with all the fixings. Constuction went well; the instructions are rather good. I have a few questions, though:
What pinion gear do you recommend? I bought the Novak Ballistic 13.5t to race in the super stock class.
I already had a 3PKS from the mini-z days. Do you (or are you aware of other racers at MHOR who) use the anti-skid braking feature of the radio? Is that common in off-road?
One of the few places in the instructions I didn't fully understand had to do with setting the differential and the slipper. Any tips for doing that?
Any other tips for a noob getting started in racing and racing at MHOR?
Thanks for your help, hope to see you up there sometime.

Kghillis- thanks we were really glad to be able to help out the losi guys at trackside. I am working on getting our setup sheets together to be put on the Losi site for easy reference.
Myrock- thanks! If you want Dustin has his own thread somewhere in the electic offroad forum or I will relay the message to him.
Xovonob-
1. Start at around 27/78 and watch to make sure your motor and speedo don't get too hot. If they don't, experiment with going up a tooth or two on the pinion.
2. I am not totally familiar with the anti-skid feature on that radio but I'm guessing it's just like abs. I'm sure you could use that feature but I would say most people do not. Makes the braking a little less consistent IMO.
3. I'm at the track usually Wednesday and Saturday. Come find me and I'll show you how to set it correctly.
4. Get either Losi Pink tires or j concepts golds and you should be good to go!

Hey Matt,
Thanks for the tip on the pink tire compound for running at MHOR.
Do you have a recommendation for Losi tire models at MHOR (e.g., BK Bar, X-2000, Big Shot, etc.)? Which do you run up there?
Matt Chambers
12-26-2009, 12:28 AM
When the track is new I like pink x3000's and taper pin
fronts. As the track dries out I like running
bk bars or taper pins and most of the times in races I run pink slicks with wd40 on them.

I actually ran my standard setup which can be found here:
http://www.losi.com/ProdInfo/Files/XXXTCR_MattChambers.pdf
I used Mf2 hubs, xxxt axles and dogbones, and the older aluminum QC adapters. Just wanted to see if running a plastic hub made the truck more forgiving and it seemed to. Also the truck didn't seem to want to drive as "square" because I was using dogbones instead of the xxxtcr's CVD style driveshaft.

Hey guys thought this was really cool and wanted to share with anyone interested. Upgrade RC now offers my paint scheme/design for some of their available wraps. You can customize colors and graphics to make it your own. I was really surprised how good my scheme looks with some different colors. Currently they are available to purchase for 1/8 buggy and truggy but I'm sure they could do it for any kind of wrap. :)

TMan- what turn motor will you be running and how many teeth is your spur gear? Let me know and I can give you a good starting setup for your gearing.
I'm running a 3300kv motor and a 82 tooth spur gear.
Matt Chambers

TMan- start with a 24 tooth pinion. Run your truck for five minutes and pull it off to check motor and speed control temperature. If neither are too hot consider gearing up a tooth at a time up to maybe a 26 or 27 tooth pinion.
Thanks for the help Matt that 24 pinon helped a lot.

Matt I will be picking up a crt for a new track in my area. It is extremely tacky red clay (feels like playdoh) most run slicks pink losi or gold j concepts. What if any changes to your standard setup would you make for this amount of traction? Would you please list the part #'s I will need to convert the rear to the mf2 hubs bones etc. like you run.
Thanks alot
Matt Chambers
09-03-2010, 06:04 PM
JW299- sorry for the late response!
As far as setup changes for a hi-bite track I would suggest thickening the shock oil 2.5-5wt front and rear as well as lowering your ride height slightly. You might also want to play around with moving the battery forward or back to see which you prefer. :)
Here are the parts needed to convert the rear end of the truck:
LOSA3031 Offset Rear Axle: GENII
LOSA3090 Dogbone w/Yoke: XXXT, NT (Pack comes with 1 dogbone so you need 2)
LOSA2123 RR Hub Carriers-VLA: XXX-T
LOSA2995 Quick Change Wheel Adapters: Electric Trucks
LOSA6903 Sealed BB, 3/16x3/8 (2) (Need 2 packs, one for each hub carrier)
LOSA9941 Bearing Spacer/Axle Washer Set
broke turn buckle in rear on xxx-t saw no part number out of kit what turn buckles do you recommend and part numbers for them
Matt Chambers
11-15-2010, 07:38 PM
Losi doesn't actually sell the turnbuckles as a part. They come with the kits only.
I would suggest picking up some Lunsford Titanium turnbuckles in the same length. They sell a full set (6 turnbuckles) or you can get the one size you want in packs of 2.

Hey matt, what do you and dustin think will work well for springs on the xxx-sct running at mhor? thanks
Matt Chambers

I have been using white springs on the back and either green or blue on the front. You might also want to try yellow on the rear which is one step stiffer than white.
Muggydude
12-14-2010, 07:15 PM
Can you post a good starting setup for mhor? Also, what tires would you recomend? Last thing, are there any sets of front and rear springs so I don't have to buy a bunch of individual sets for tuning options?
Matt Chambers
12-15-2010, 05:23 AM
Muggydude- below is my xxx-cr setup. I would also suggest getting a pair of silver front springs and yellow rear springs to try. These are both a little stiffer than I have on my setup but depending on your driving style you might like them. Also, Losi Pink compound tires work well at MHOR. I usually run pink bk bars or pink taper pins. Some also like the fools Jconcepts tires but I don't have enough experience with them to say.

So that is your buggy setup? Any changes for the SCT? By the way, thanks for helping me find a pit spot at Pizza Feast;)
What setup did you run at the Spektrum Race? And what changes would you make for MHOR? Thanks again for all your help.

Muggydude- whoops for some reason I thought you were asking for my xxx-CR setup!
For my XXX-SCT I have left it totally stock except for these changes:
Front shock: 32.5wt oil, 57(black) pistons, blue Spring
Rear Shock: 27.5wt oil, 56(red) pistons, White or Yellow spring
I also put about 3oz weight behind the battery and under the rear shock tower.
I have been running AKA super-soft "Wishbone" tires frot and rear and the truck works really well. :)

Cool, I will try that when i get it! I think i'm going to try either jc gold bar codes all around or barcodes rear with double dees up front. Think i should start with yellow or white in rear first?
Nice talking to you at the track today!

Start with white and try yellow (stiffer) at some point and see which you like better.

Hey Matt,
Can you tell me what under tray you guys use on your 22? I'm assuming you use one. I saw Dustin had one on a youtube video "A closer look at the Team Losi Racing "22""
Thanks,

Hi,
We have mainly been using Losi chassis tape. I think in that video Dustin had taken a custom made chassis tape for his XXX-CR and cut it to fit on his 22. That chassis tape was made by Upgrade RC. I believe UpGrade will be making custom chassis tape for the 22 soon though.

hey matt.
Just pre-ordered my 22 buggy. What are some recommended changes for it? Preferably setup for MHOR. Thanks a lot!

Honestly you should be good-to-go with the kit car. I have been running a 100% stock 22 and have been very pleased with it. Might not hurt to pick up a few different spring rates for front and rear to play around with suspension tuning. So far I have been very pleased with the kit setup :)

should i put grease or silicone oil in the diff? i have never assembled one before.
Matt Chambers
03-24-2011, 03:35 PM
I will let you know on any changes :)
As far as the 22's ball diff is concerned you should only ever use clear grease like is provided in the kit. Silicon fluid is used primarily for gear differentials. When building your ball diff be sure to use a liberal amount of grease... I usually put too much in and wipe out the excess so it can't collect dirt or debris.
If you ever have questions come see me at MHOR, I'll be glad to help :)

Hey Matt,
Will I be able to interchange the Gen. 1 and Gen. 2 dogbones on my xxx-t? I want to switch LOSA3091 with A3090. Will they hold up?
Thanks,
Mike

They are a different length so you will run into problems with their plunge into the outdrives

Hey Matt, what tires and foams do you recommend for the 22 at mhor?
Matt Chambers
04-04-2011, 01:18 PM
I like using Losi Pink Taper Pin or Pink BK-Bars with some type of closed cell foam. For fronts I like the Losi pink Taper Pins. Some people use either the PL or JC tires at MHOR and they seem to work well also.

Hey Andrew,
It was good seeing you back out at the track.
With the 22 there isn't really anything it needs. Out of the box all the parts are pretty durable. The kit setup is what I run and it works really well at a variety of tracks. Start with that setup and see where you want to go from there.
As far as driving tips... The 22 drives really well and carries good corner speed. Just be sure to let the car roll through the corners. The smoother you drive it, the faster your lap times will be. Other than that... Practice often :)
If ya got questions I'll be at the track

thanks alot bro !:D really appreciate it! i got a used xxx4g+ for just over 100 bucks a few weeks ago in good condition and just got done re-building it all and gone through, i did find the NOS losi alloy pivot blocks that arent made anymore for it at a LHS.
any other upgrades or mods that are a must to do while im setting up the XXX4 ? have you tried out the big bore shocks from the 22 on the XXX4 yet ? any input would be greatly appreciated
Matt Chambers

Other than the aluminum pivots there isn't too much that's needed. I run aluminum front caster blocks (can't remember who makes them) and Lunsford titanium shock mounts but they are not a necessity.
I have tried the 22 shocks on my XXX-4 and I think they work really well in bumpy or choppy conditions. I still prefer the standard shocks on a smoother track though. The 22 shocks felt good overall but seemed like they allowed the car to go through the travel more than I liked. If I try them again on my XXX-4 I will probably try a smaller hole piston and stiffer spring to correct that. :)

so i just replaced all of the gears in the rear diff and still skipping and i dont know wat it is
Matt Chambers
05-11-2011, 05:22 PM
I'm guessing your talking about an 1/8 rear diff. Check the following things...
- the diff case has slots that the diff gears sit in. Over time the pins that sit in the slots can wear out and cause it to click. If it is worn out replace the diff case.
- also if you are referring to a 2.0 rear diff you can change the shimming to tighten up the gear mesh between the pinion and diff gears. Use the shims to move the diff so it is closer to the pinion and this might fix the clicking.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi Matt,
I read people talking about getting the spindle to 11 mm from 13,5 mm by grinding. I believe in order to get more steering which I'm looking for. However I have no idea how and what to measure. Could you please help explaining it to me? Thank you so much.

I ran across this page on rctech a few weeks ago. There are some pics and I believe explanation and correct measurements. Hope this helps and let me know if you have more questions.
