Stock 16/45 is a good starting point for 4S battery and the 1700KV.
Starting setup. The drake setup is a great starting point.
Nothing really NEEDS to be upgraded. Rear hubs to alum is a good place to start as it is one of the very few parts that could break with a good hit. alum steering servo and alum upper servo saver arm would be next.

Thanks Casper, what are the benefits to running the aluminum upper servo saver arm?

Stronger with less flex for more precise steering.

so on my first day at the track with my eight e 2.0 I hit a rut or something on the track and my buggy did a few cartwheels and pulled the screw that holds the piston on the rear shock shaft right out of the shaft it did not break it just pulled the threads right out. not really a big deal but of course i did not have a spare and neither did anyone else but i was kind of choked because i was only on the track for maybe 15m and then i was done for the day. i was just wondering if this was a common problem or just a total fluke?
Casper
01-21-2011, 02:37 PM
I would call that one a total fluke. My bet is the nut might not have been tight on the shaft or you had a bad shaft or something like that. With the droop screws that limit down travel, there should be very little stress on the piston in the shock even from hard hits. First I have heard of such a thing. Did you find the nut in the shock and the threads were stripped out of it?
ROOST 28
01-21-2011, 03:38 PM
it is actually a screw not a nut, on my kyosho's the shock shafts are threaded and there is a nylock nut that holds the piston on but on my eight the top of the shaft is actually hollow and threaded and there is a little screw that screws into it to hold the piston on and the screw pulled right out of the shaft taken the threads with it. after the crash the left rear susp was collapsed and looked like the shaft was broken so i took the shock apart and the shaft fell out of the bottom of the shock so i took the cap off and the piston and screw was still in the shock body. i thought it was kind of strange as i have had some fairly big crashes and have yet to have something like this happen.
Casper
01-21-2011, 06:02 PM
Sorry you are right. Got my shocks mixed up. I would bet the screw was not properly thread locked in and just fell out. I have not taken my 8ight shocks apart in a really long time! LOL
The Ten shocks have nuts is what I was thinking about.
I did have a screw come out of shock a long time ago when I was testing. Make sure you get it thread locked in place good before you rebuild the shock and you should be good to go! ;)

I had the same thing happen last season. My car drove kinda funny with no damping in one of the rear shocks. All because I didn't locktite the screw when changing piston the day before.

I ran my car, it was great, tell I pulled the shock out of the bottom right rear. I didn't adjust the droup screws. I bought the shock kit, replaced the bottom end of the shock and the rubber boot, I am wondering in the readings of set up in the manual, its saying set up the car with 55 mm of adjustment. from where do you read the adjustments. off of the body pan or where ? I adjusted the droup so that the a arms were level. the car is almost uncontrollable. should I set the droup so that the arms just barely hit bottom ? ( wording )
Thanks in advance
Casper

Since measuring droop directly is a little tricky most poeple measure it with shock lengths.
To measure droop you need to prop the chassis on something like a rim on front and rear or droop blocks. Then you measure from the table to the bottom of the hub. Subtract this measurement from the thickness of the wheel or the droop block to get you final measurement.
Either that or just meaure the extended length of the shocks from upper screw center to lower screw center while on the car. The drop screws will limit shock length and this is a good way to measure droop as well. That is how you see it on most all Losi setup sheets. The shock length is on the setup sheets to tell you how much droop they have set in the car.
You want some droop. You typically get more rear droop then front droop but the car will not handle well without any. The less traction you have the more droop you want to set in the car. The more traction you have the less droop you will want as this will reduce the possiblity of traction rolling as traction gets really high if you ever experience that condition.

I would like to see TLR come out with an electric specific 1/8 E-Buggy that is not just a nitro with conversion. I feel some of the new 1/8 kits coming out from other brands have a much better balanced chassis for racing these as E-Buggy's.

Thank you for that answer Casper. its nice to have this site.
Today I called Tekin to talk about set up with the hot wire and found out that the new esc was a old unit that I just purchased as new in my local hobby store here in Havasu Az and its fried, had to mail it back with only 4 runs on the car. I will get back to you on how it handles when I get the esc back in the mail in about two weeks. Don't ya just love hobby's lol

Chucko the buggy is a national championship winning designed buggy. That is among the best out there. I would just like to see a chassis design with the twin 2-cell lipo configuration. I think having the motor on the front left, servo or the right and lipos out back offers the best weight distribution for fast lap times. I will continue to run my current 8ightE 2.0 but hope something is in the pipeline to be released down the road. Chucko you have the best E-Buggy out their with a great team Driver support for setup so have fun.

is there a standard for changing oils ? and rebuilding the car? like,... how many runs do you get out of dif oils. a week, a month, 6 10 20 races or when you change locations. ? should you take the car apart, rebuild it after each race ? This is a new car. I want to keep it running at its best. Thanks.
Casper
01-26-2011, 08:58 PM
That is up to you and how much you race. Rebuilding shocks and diffs is a little bit of a preference thing. I would think ever couple race days if you really want to stay on top of it. I probably go 5-10 race days depending on the tracks I go to. I probably put 5-6 runs per race day so you are looking at 30-50 runs.

Not all 8th scale motors are the same size I don't think. The losi one is 670 size I think.
You are looking for somthingin the high 1000KV range. (1700, 1800, 1900) Anything more then that on 4S is too much power IMO for most racing applications.

I only have a total of 4 batteries on my part so far, but I had no problems with it. I would say that something is wrong somewhere. O PT or the receiver would have been my first hypothesis. Have you tried a different TP or the receiver? Let me start from here, removing one at a time.

well the Punisher will fit but not as well, they have a E-Version out or comming out
may already be on the market now.....??
i know D&B Designs has a few different ones,
but the stock Losi one is pretty good. i do use Both
if you run a Flater type 4S will be "Sung" if you have say for Example the Turnigy hard case type packs which are about the typical height of a hard case pack the Punisher body "Wont Fit"
i'll post an example of the D&B body as it will easily fit a Tall 4s pack like the stock one can but the D&B one is Lower.
as for motors like Casper mentioned the 1700 - 1800 - and 1900 series type motors are more than enough on a typical 4S pack........
a given Example i run a fairly "Large Track" Revelation with Medium to fairly good traction and is about 200 feet wide by about 100 feet deep
and i'll run a 1700Kv on 4S with a 15 Pinion and it's REALLY FAST !!! and can get about 17min of run time with temps in the 155 range.....

We don't right now. I will add it to the list of ideas.
If you really want an accurate measurement, you can always put the car up against the wall and use a camber gauge to the floor/table to check each side. I have done this in a pinch, but I usually eye ball it.
Casper
02-02-2011, 09:41 AM
You can't mesure toe in degress but with these big calipers you can measure the difference between the front and rear of the tires to at least find 0 and adjst from there.
http://www.harborfreight.com/24-inch-jumbo-aluminum-caliper-96509.html
To measure angles you really kind of need a setup board. I am sure there may be another creative way but toe is pretty hard to actually measure in angles accurately.

well what i used to do was the Caliper thing, and those ones that Casper showed are pretty Dialed !! come in pretty usefull for allot of different things, even around the house :)
but cool thing about those you'll be able to easily measure toe on a buggy or truggy !!
but before i had those fancy ones, like the HUDY's
a friend of mine had some Acrylic Plates
they were about 3 inches wide and about 4 inches tall and about a little over 1/4 inch thick...
then he drilled a Hole about the "Height" of where the tire would be,little like the HUDY ones,
Just Bolt them to the Axles........
so once they were mounted, you could measure it a little easier,
so with the car on i would set the toe at "0" so the plate was as wide in "Front"
as it was in the "Rear"
and how i did that was Measure it with a Caliper to see if was same "Distance"
then, i would set the "Toe" out, my friend figured it out for me but "Roughly" about the "Width" of a Penny is roughly about 1.2 deg
so, when i had the Width of about 2 "Pennys" wider in the front than the rear
i had a Beginning start of about 1.2 deg of toe "Out" per side in the front ..:)
the cool part was with the plates on there you could "Dead Center" your Camber
with the Losi camber Guage !!!... :)
here is the cool thing, you can go to a "Home-Depot" and get the Acrylic sheet for about 10.00 and make about 8 to 10 plates !!! and pretty easy to make with some basic tools....wont be as "Micro-Percise" as the HUDY or other kinds?
but they sure will help......

I have a losi 2.0 with RX8 + Tekin 1350 + 6 cells.
I have tried pinion 14t but the car is ****ely slow both on acceleration and top speed.... ( the last year I had a 1900 motor + RX8 geared 15t so I have a quicker performance comparison in mind )
I was suggested to increase the pinion to 15-16t and I tend to agree because even if the pinion seems to be too large there is a ratio relationship that seems to be better with a larger pinion even if I miss also acceleration.... that seems to be an efficiency range of a brushless motor I was told
How would you comment that ?
Any opinion expecially from the ones who have the same RX8 Tekin combo ( RX8 + 1350 truggy motor on a Losi buggy 2.0) are more than wellcome

The sway bars need to have free movement. The screws allow for 1 mount to service multiple size of sway bars. With the bar disconnected from both arms, tighten both set screws until the lightly touch, then back each off in 1/4 turn increments until the bar is free and will move up and down without resistance.

Then the 10 degree aluminum blocks were hot, back order everywhere. What blocks and spindels actually work ? I am confused as to inclined verses stock and 10 versus 12, there seems to be several stock numbers for the aluminum pieces I need . Hello everyone.
I have a question that may seem a little strange. But I am about to purchase an 8ightE 2.0 buggy and was wondering if Losi had any plans in the near future for releasing a new 8th scale platform? I don't want to drop so much money into a new car just for it to be out of vogue in a few months to a year. I was wondering if the 8ight 2.0 and 8ightT 2.0 platform is the platform you plan on carrying for a while? I was also going to purchase an 8ightT truggy as well. I was just wondering when losi had plans of starting on a new 8th scale platform just cuz I want to enjoy my toys for a while before they're outta style. know what I mean?
Thanks!

a 18 will be pushing it? check temps to see what your getting at around 7 minutes the motor will tell ya ;)
what you want is to keep it geared for a 10 minute run without getting "Hot"
since 10 minute seems to be an "Average" of what most 1/8 scale electric mains will run...
for Spindles what many are going to are the 10* ones, for that you'll need the losa1734 AND the losa1729
i use these on my buggies and truggies but for me i like the 12* and stock on both of my Truggies(Electric and Nitro)
but on the Nitro Buggy and my Electric the 10* ones are "Choice":D
if you shop around can find these for around 39.95 :)
V is that you??? :)
for bladeracer,
the 2.0 platforms are pretty good Ironicly when Team losi broke a little away from Horizon setting there sights for a race platform as they "Once Were"
they did there homework on this one, there is not really allot of anythng one will need to do to make these Perform, the car is very Neutral and Stable.
only things one may need from the RTR counterparts is Alloy shock tops,
and shock shafts later down the road,
the RTR's and the Race rollers are one and the "Same"
except the towers are "Stamped" out and the chassis as well, the race rollers the towers and chassis are milled out and have "Alloy" shock caps and Ti-Nit shock shafts.....other than that there "Identical":)
when you have a little more change, the chassis is a good upgrade,Oh and get a Bottom Chassis protector from D&B Designs!! covers the entire bottom!!
the stock setups on the 8 and 8t's are really good !!
in my E-Buggy it is Box Stock except for the front spindles....and i race at 3 different tracks for my E-Buggy and i just change the "Springs" and double check my ride height, and it is dialed !!
one indoor and 2 huge outdoor tracks......
if they do have any changes? will probally be small running changes?
:):)

Where do you guys mount your transponder in the 8ight-e? I use the switch on the receiver box location so I need somewhere else..
On top of center diff brace maybe??
Anyone put it there and does it count laps good at that location?
thx

There's a great spot for it. The track can bump up the transponder receiver's voltage to less sensitive transponder setups too... and they really should be checking each driver in individually to ensure they are picked up. Here's where i've mounted mine in the buggy.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e211/euro_zx5/RC/IMG_2163.jpg
That's a good spot, but prob is that I'm using that switch location for my ESC switch...
Any other ideas??
Anyone use it on top of center diff mount with success?

just stick it in your reciever box there is a ton or space in there with all the small 2.4 recievers center diff mount will work too but the closer to the front the better
Never thought of that..good idea.
I guess that's a "in the box" idea instead of thinking "out of the box"
Great, thx

when doing the alignment, in the manual it shows measuring the end pins on the rods at 92 mm and same for steering link which makes the front end tow out. I cant afford a hudy so measuring toe out is it good to use the measuring of the rod ends or just do it on a board with a straight edge ? Thanks just trying to get er right..

I couldn't get my T8 in with the motor support installed, so I had to remove it. I am trying to set the mesh, is there a good way to do this? I've got 4 of these and don't want to start going through spur gears. There is another guy about our track who has gone through 5 of the plastic spur's in the past month.

I honestly have never stripped a Single Spur, I also run a Matrix Chassis so Chassis Flex would be an even bigger issue if that were the case. What kind of pinion's are you running ? Losi and Robinson over here and they look great after many of packs. What kind of electronics is the other guy running ? are the spurs more prone to going on your E truggy Vs E buggy ?

With Just A Slight Tick of play, The pinion teeth can float in between the spur teeth with just a tick each way. You could go with a Steel gear but you might not like how loud they tend to be.
I use the tekno conversion on my 8ight T (originally nitro kit)and 8ight B (originally nitro race roller)and they look so much more professional than the Losi "stick it to the chassis thats there band-aid conversion" Losi sells. It has multiple radio box locations, an actual transponder MOUNT plate, even comes with screws that sit better into the chassis so you can put a chassis protector on without issue.
This conversion is also a great starting point for a RTR since you would need a chassis anyway 8)
Great vehicles either way and any electric conversion is better than nitro 8)
I have tekin RX8 + T8 combos in both. The truck I was using the 4s 5000 mah 30c turnigy with a 1550 with 16/48 it is very nice with this setup for my son who is 12 not too fast but not slow, stock setup for shocks and it jumps like a dream. Built out of the kit version, using the standard setup, zero variations. (besides the tekno conversion and some king heads stuff)
The buggy has a 5s 5000mah turnigy with a 2050 motor 13/48 and it screams. it's way too fast. I am swapping motors and batteries so the truck will be a bit faster and the buggy a bit slower. It will pull wheelies on take off and LAUNCHES off jumps lol.
I also use associated XP DS1313 servos for steering in both vehicles and never had any stervos burn up, but there again, i never did in my stock RTR 8ight 2.0 buggy I bought first.
Overall the 8ight is a great platform, just bought another one for my stepdad for his birthday so we all can race together, and have spare parts if we break 8)
I have my sights on a scte just cause its so cute like a mini 8ight.. gonna get one for my fiance and see if that will entice her. Thank the Lord she likes small things.....
I was a lifer Associated fan in the 80s when i raced sponsored, jrx2 boiled my blood and Gil Losi was anything but a nice guy when I met him at the O'hare model hobby show in chicago. The 8ight has brought me on board and I am a very satisfied customer.
Now with basically Adam Drake as the face of the company, I like it, seems more modern somehow.
End ramble~
swapped the truck and buggy motors / batteries and it seems about perfect, both could be a touch faster but they are scooting around nicely now.
Both jump like a dream, doesnt really matter what I do to the shocks they still jump perfectly lol.
8ight in either buggy or truggy form is a unbeatable platform. My hat is off to the folks at Losi for doing this so well.
I am a Losi fan for sure.
JConcepts chassis protectors are SO nice.. super clear, I put one piece on the center of the chassis and use scraps for the diff ends, works nicely for replacing just that part when u need to rebuild the diffs.
Also, rubber coated shock covers are *LOVE*... pick up 40" on ebay for 20$ its enough to do 2 sets of truggy shocks.
Just got the new truggy UPS for my stepdad, going to set it all up for him tonight so he can join the 8ight madness with me.
I am no expert by far but have built the kit versions of both and rebuilt enough of them with tekno conversions so if anyone has any questions they wanna ask about that stuff, I would love to share!
the motor in the truck never read over 131 the motor in the buggy hit 114! lol... ESC you wouldnt even know it was on, not hot whatsoever.
long story short:
Truggy
RX8 + 2050 T8 + 5s 30c 5000mah lipo 13/48
Buggy
RX8 + 1550 T8 + 4s 30c 5000mah lipo 16/48
conclusion, I think i will stick with 5S in both everything else unchanged.
After 10 battery cycles no burned servos, the only single thing I have had to rework is one of the shock shafts pulled out of the shock end, nothing some fironi(sp) shock ends wont fix.

WHAT IS THIS...A TUBE OF RUBBER YOU CUT FOR THE SHOCKS, OR ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE BLACK ONES THAT LOSI MAKES?
Also...when i break before the corner on my 8-e, it tends to lift the back end up at times, almost as if the front is breaking more than the rear on a nitro. I figure its the shock oil or diffs...what does someone suggest?

Hey guys, picked up an 8ight E 2.0 and I'm looking for pinion recommendations.
I'm going to be running 4s (for practice) and 3s (for club racing, small track requires it).
My setup:
MMM ESC
Tekin 2050kv
3s/4s
45T spur
What pinions would you recommend? Is there one that can split the difference between the packs? Totally fine if I have to switch pinions between packs. Looking to keep temps down with good punch for tighter tracks.
Neobart
07-03-2011, 11:03 AM
There isn't a gearing you can run that will work with both 3 and 4s IMO.
For 3s I would go with a 17t pinion, 4s go with 14.
I run on medium sized tracks with my MM 2200 motor. EPA at 80% and 14/45 gearing.
1700-1900 really is the hot ticket for 4s setups.
Thanks guys I really appreciate it. I was at the track today and it looks like I will be able to run 4S LiFe instead of switching between a 3S and 4S lipo setup. The nominal voltage of 4s LiFe lies dead center between 3s and 4s lipo. What do you think of a 16/45 starting setup for a tight indoor track?
Really appreciate the help!
Also, is there a post somewhere that explains gearing 1/8th E buggys? I'm used to the "if your temps are high, go down a couple teeth on the pinion" saying, so this is quite a change for me!
Thanks Rob, I appreciate the response. :)

hey just got the kit a little new to buggy's but the battery tray seems a little large for my 4s. i have a thunder power 4s 5300mah. am i blind and missing a part that holds the battery in tight or is that just how the battery tray is? or was there a specific battery thats made for that tray. because it seems the straps are set up for the battery to be pushed all the way to the front of the tray but there is like a 1" gap in between the battery and the rear of the tray. because to me the battery looks like its going to slide back and forth.

It souldnt slide, They did that so you can play with weight distribution. If it does slide for some reason. Get some battery foam and stuff it in there

your lipo sliding is 1 dangerous and 2 will move weight forward and back and thats not a good thing
battery foams required for sure to be safe and will help maintain the weight of the buggy when jumping
stock tyres are pretty soft but i dont know what colour that works out to be sorry

strap them down nice and tight to begin with and most of the teams set up sheets have the battery forward for more steering anyway. If you do have them in the middle or rear biased, and do a good nose dive a a couple of hard cartwheels, it will shift

My center diff has a U shaped metal part on the outside of the Planetary Gear that fits into the Diff Housing. Everything is fine. I don't know of anyone still using the smart diff. The buggy is a great buy. Parts readily availible. Lots of support and knowledge all over.

Whats the best camber adjustment for a Losi Eight E Buggy and toe out adjustment....
It really depends on the track conditions, usually between (-)1-2 deg of camber and +1-2 degrees of toe out.

Hi guys(: well i have a few questions well first i have a team associated rc8be and the hinge pins have no idea how to stay in the a-arms so i am thinking bout buying a losi 8ight e 2.0. Is it worth the money? Is it better than the rc8be? And honestly what would be better a losi 8ight e 2.0 or a associated rc8.2e or an kyosho inferno or a mugen mbx6? Please help me thanks :D

All the top brand buggies will be able to get it done. the 8ight series has proven to be a very race worthy and very durable platform. Adam Drake has really be tearing up the racing scene winning quite a few recent races with his 8ight-e 2.0. When I ran mine it was extremely durable and took what ever punishment I through at it and just kept trucking along.

Ok well i have one question about the losi 8ight e 2.0 cuz i asked a guy about his when i was at revelation raceway and he said he hated his so i had to ask y and he said because the esc mount would crack the esc case if he took a hard hit so is this common? And can u buy the esc mount like aluminum?

It isn't the mount, it was the ESC case that used to come with this car. Now you get the Roller w/o electronics, so you should have no issues.

The battery rules really depend on the track. I know that plenty of tracks all for 6s (total), but ROAR rules at 4s max.

Do I really need a 3/8 nut driver? Just took a look at the manual and couldn´t find a nut with that size.

New to 8th scale racing and 4wd drive in general. Mainly run 2wd buggy, truck and short course. Loving the Eight though. Something totally different. Its handling and jumping well but have real issues with on/off power steering – it has none. I really have to come into corners loose to try and get the back to come around or I’m running too wide and letting people pass me on the inside constantly. I’m running on a large indoor track of clay at the moment and am using sway bars which I’m thinking I should take off? I’m looking for a good indoor clay setup for this car; something that’s going to give me some steering. Any help appreciative. Or maybe it just me coming from a 2wd background and I need to be doing something different went approaching corners?

The biggest thing you have to get used to with an 1/8th electric car is that brakes are BAD. If you brake entering the turn, it will lock up the fronts, and cause a pretty good push. If you need to brake, you want to do so before you turn. In other words, don't "Brake and Turn", instead, "Brake then turn". This will help a lot.
I pretty much always moved the battery pretty far back, ran the softest front sway bar, and I really prefered the inclined front spindles as well.

What about toe and camber? You do anything different when running indoors compared to a large outsdie track?
You planning on getting down to SDRC for the Top Gun in a couple of weeks?
