Dies when put in gear?

so i bought a lst xxl from a my buddy tht is a losi nut. he told me the motor new. i did the idle break in ran it easy for 3-4 tanks. always ran hot according to remote no matter how rich i made it. i had a new 454 in the box. i had a used set of clutch shoes the need filed a lil bit and cleaned. i swapped the motord ran 3 tanks at idle no problem. well i give it gas and it just revs. i put in gear on the tranny by hand it dies instantly!! i thought the shes were on backwards so i flipped and cleaned them real good. they do look ok my losi exp. no longer buddy said they were good when i got the stuff from him.i can get it to run in rev. but the sec. i stop it dies. cant even get it to go forward. so the only thing i have changed is the engines. so why am i having this problem? i never had any trouble besides the other motor running hot. any idea wht would cause this? does it matter which way the shoes point? thanks for any help advise. im new to the site new to losi.

Only thing it sounds like to me is the slipper clutch. Have you checked the slipper clutch???? I know there are people on here who know a lot more than I do. But from my end it sounds like the slipper clutch. I also have a xxl and love the truck. I was running it today and my servos frozed clipping a tree at 30 something. Not good Haha. You can check it out the pics is on this fourm in monster truck under my name.. good luck and Congrats you want be disappointed when you get the bugs out. Just watch out for trees not tree proof just found that out today....:eek:
