Basically you want a tick of play between the Ring gear and the Pinion....the shims go Overtop of the flanged diff bearing's and shim the Insert's in or out......if you have ran the truck for a while and there's nothing wrong you more then likely don't have to do anything....are you installing a new rear diff ?...the 2.0 diff cases have different inserts for the diff case and there's a little extra slop built in for shimming...but your 1.0 case was build to be Tight.

you shouldnt be leaving any play.
it should be a little notchy at first. run it for a few tanks and then check it. they should have freed up and be ready to rock

this is how casey explained it and i've never had a pinion and ring gear go.

I leave a tick of play in my R+P's.....which is not to say it does not have a notchy spot...but i look for that tick of plan first...then if its still got the nothcyness i call it good....my Original Truggy R+P has a Tick of play all the way around the R+P and its Over 20gallons old....so imo a tick of play is more then acceptable in shimming a R+P....plus its how you shim every other diff except the losi.
