Hey Adam. I understand the shimming process for the rear diff and check it regularly. I have had no problems with stripping the ring and pinion gears, front or rear.
I have found it interesting that the front diff does not require shimming in the manual. In going through the front diff, I noticed both side to side play in the diff assembly (where the bearings sit in the housing) and slightly excessive gear lash in the ring and pinion. I can add a .025mm rear diff shim on the ring side bearing to get rid of the side to side play and tighten up the ring and pinion gear mesh.
While this seems like an obvious answer, I am curious why Losi doesn't discuss this in the manual like they do with the rear diff.
Do you ever shim your front diffs looking to achieve that "high/tight spot" in the mesh, or at least to remove the side to side play?
Thanks - Jim Brown
