Well I'm sure I'm not in the same league as Adam or Mike but maybe you might need to know something off the-wall like...
"Why you don't want to carry your battery drill through airport security?"
Or "why are White castle Burgers so good?"
how about "what's a normal day like for a stay at home Dad like your self?"
maybe you want to know "why do you like the color Orange so much?":)
"Who paints your Bodies?"
Or my personal favorite "Why is your buggy ride height so high?"
I am happy to answer these questions and more.... Ask away.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH that was funny.....riiiight Trevor!;) Actually that cap is a pretty cool way to keep junk out of the gun when storing it (too bad Billy kept it on.)
How are you doing Randy?

Love ya Trev!!
Casey, prety cool having your own forum!!
Never got to properly thank you for the use of your pop-up tent at the Nitro Challenge in February. We are hoping to have the whole team in Arizona in 2010 as this was such a great race. We are going to try and ship our tent and all our stuff so we can look the part.
It has been pretty cool signing up FOX Racing as a sponsor and some of the new swag we have been getting is top shelf. If you have not seen their new running shoes you have to check them out. Click on the Fox logo on the right side of our team website www.sprucewoodracing.com
See Ya

No Problem David. Glad it worked out for you guys. I have met and made alot of great friends traveling around to races and thought It would be cool to have a place to talk. Like I said Adam sure is the God Father of our nitro program. He has worked really hard and deserves his accomplishments. Hopefuly I can add a bit of the knowledge I have picked up from him and help someone out that needs it. Its cool to finaly have a Losi forum of our own!!
You guys really have a cool thing going. The fox site is awesome I need a hook up like that. :)
When will the rest of the Losi team make the trip to Australia?
When will Losi make a 16mm rear hub for the 8T 2.0?
Im sick of people asking me to do the mod for them and then complain that the shipping from AUS to US is to expensive.

1.I would love to go to Australia but I can't go without my wife she would kill me!
2.Probably not going to happen
I hear ya. my wife cracks it when i get up to early to go racing
Do you use the Losi rims on your Truggy and Buggy?
If so do you punch a hole in the tire or only use the hole thats in the rims?
Ive always punched a hole in the tire for the dirt to throw out of
Casey Peck
08-19-2009, 07:53 AM
Yes I run the Losi rims and use a leather punch to punch the tire. Usually 2 holes 180* from each other in the middle of the tread
cheers casey
ive always punched the tire. but ive onle just started using the losi rims

Hi Casey,
I would like to know on what kind of track the smart diffs are mostly used?
Are they useful on a slippery / bumpy / 'with holes' tracks?
Do you recommand to start with the center smart diff and then the front smart diff?

Casey Peck

Gil... I like the smart diffs for those exact conditions. I would start with the center first
Losi...Not sure about Billy but I will be taking a break for awhile for some surgery and recoup. How has it been out there lately? I am itch'n to get back out there!

Hey Casey
When you run the XTB tires do you use the stock foams or do you switch them out with the newer losi moulded foams?
Also are losi planing on changing the foam that comes with these tires to match the rest of the tire range?
I love the XTB's and i really love the XTT's i just wish they came with the same foams as the rest of the range so it was easier to run them in combo

Several of us at the local track are having problems eating the rear R&P gears. I have tried everything from correct shimming to AL inserts and have no luck. I’m always checking for play and nothing seems to work. I do replace everything when I rebuild from gear box to cup. I’m about to be on my 3rd set, do you have any ideas what could be causing this?
Reggie L

LOSI NEEDS TO MAKE A BETTER PION TO SIT PROPERLY IN THE RING GEAR... shimming wont hold for long if the pion dont even sit in the pion right

bear...Not sure on the Muggy looks like it might be gone.
Basher.... When I start out with a new set up I replace all of the parts. gearbox, all four bearings (even if they look or feel ok) inserts, pinion and ring gear, then I shim it with new shims on the tight side and check it after a couple of break in runs. I do think the case strectches a touch so I keep up on the shimming. If I hear it skip under breaking I pull it off the track an replace the pinion. Not saying you arent doing this but this is what I do. I have a gallon on the one that's in my truck right now. And my beater buggy has probably 12+ gallons on the origional ring and pinion
Sup Reggie! you racing this weekend?
Casey, I have a few question on Adam's Thunder Alley setup. I've been wanting to try this since I'll be racing on a pretty tight technical track. On this track I usually run Adam's standard setup with center SD and stiffer rear sway bar which helps the car rotate a little better. What I'm looking for is to get more low speed steering since some of the corners have very little run up to them. What's with the drastic changes from his standard setup? Is it an all or nothing setup? For the anti-squat it shows 2* but the comment has 1's upfront which I believe is 3* anti-squat. Which should it be?
Thanks

I replace everything, whole new rear end. It just seems odd that so many are breaking. I think there is a design flaw. I will give it a few more tries, then it will time for a change I guess.

slow.... yes most set ups are going to be designed to run the whole set up. each adjustment is going to be a needed peice of the puzzle. I think that is a miss print on the 2*. You are correct 1's up is 3*
Thanks. Do you think this will be a good setup for a slow technical track? I'll also try it with a center SD.

yo casey i have a question i have 2 motors my ninja and vspec both of them have a lean bog i can not get-rid of...i switched pipes and it was better but still boged...i thought mabe it was a air leak so i switched tanks and fuel line...still the same thing. you think its the clutch? i run 4 alum shoes by answer rc...i know my buddy aaron was telling me try 2carbon and 2 alum but he said i need the green springs for the carbon...
do you think its the motor or clutch problem?

Casey, im kinda new to this ive been doing rc races at my club for a little over a year now and i would like ot ask you what are the advantages and disadvantages to making your ride height taller or shorter and also was wondering about how much money do you have in your main truggy...o ya i should mention we are talking truggys now srry:D

08-28-2009, 02:05 PM
Reggie... do they run hot? sounds like you have already done what I have done except starting the tune super rich on top and bottom. Then re tune from there. Truggy I like 2 carbon w/gold and 2 alu with silver.
Lars... Generally you would run your ride height high if you want to get more chassis roll and react to the terain bumps etc or if you lack traction. And lower if you are on super smooth traction surfaces, This would be true for most situations. Boy you can put quite a bit of money in a Truggy if using all of the top of the line equiptment

Hey guys I thought I might share a few pics. Greg of Gregs graf-x just got these done for me. It's sweet to have my scheme on these as well. Lately I have been running the green strike body and a rattle can green crawler body. Greg couldn't stand it any more and got these done in a hurry. He even surprised me and painted in the headlights and grilles. Then I had to put on some killer chrome stickers from Gary at Vinyl Graphics Unlimited to make them look like the rest of the fleet. Thanks Greg and Gary!!

Hey man...you can check it out if you want but it honestly not the tune I'm a pretty good runner and just in case it was me I had 2 other good tuners start at stock setings and retune and still the same thing...
.so I need 2 scraped up some money and get another motor so I can just start over
I would race this weekend but money is tight and I still need another lipo for my starter box since mine blew...then the truck needs new shock fluid etc I'm going to try the shoter links and casey/billys set up for the next time I run..I just wanna have everything good
I'm goon to sell some stuff and bite the bulit and buy thoes jr hv servos..I should be back soon
I run byrons gen2 and I'm in ocean city any way I can't race
Hey Casey
I am having a bit of trouble with geting a setup for one of the tracks i run at. The track is hardpacked and rough underneith and loose on top. its very wide open and has lots of wide corners.
My truggy gets around pretty good but it jsut tends to push a little through the middle of the corner and then get really loose on the way out.
I run the BCE speed chassis and the setup is;
Front
6* toe out
38mm ride height
2* camber
2.3mm sway bar
32.5wt / 55 / Black
108mm Droop
2/A C Link
2/Mid shock pos
Front SmartDiff with 4x .20
Center SmartDiff with 4x .15
Rear
2.75* toe out (0 inserts)
3* Antisquat (1 inserts up)
43mm ride height
3* camber
2.3mm sway bar
27.5wt / 56 / White
130mm Droop
1/B C Link
3/Mid shock pos
3K Rear Diff
What would i change to help this and why?
Also in my buggy i am running very close to the stock setup bar 30wt/55 in the rear. the buggy seems to bounce all over the track and is very hard to keep stable. what would be some good changes for the same track conditions
Cheers
Casey Peck
08-31-2009, 01:19 PM
hey Tix
I would start with moving the hubs forward for more off power rotation and on power traction. Then a little less toe out.( toe out will smooth out the middle corner steering and not get out of the corner well. And try lighter diff oil for more off power rotation.
Also give the short ackerman to see what you like
Sounds like you need to just "numb" the buggy a bit. Maybe try thicking the oil front and rear and lots of toe out! A thinner center diff will help as well maybe try 5 or less. In extreme cases you can remove the rear brace as long as there are no big jumps.

I used to run the hubs forward to put more weight over the rear. but i moved them back to try and release the back of the car. so i should have left them
For the buggy would i be better to just try the smaller hole pistons first, say 55 front and 56 rear with 40wt and 30wt
at the moment i have 40wt/54 and 30wt/55
Cheers

Casey, any chance you can attain Darren Bloomfields setup from the Proline race in Slough? That track looks very similar to what we have over here in Denmark. Bumps ruts and such.
I've had a 2mm sway bar(as part of set) on order for ages, but no joy at mo - do you think i'd get away with getting a bit of 2mm steel and making one till the proper one turns up?
Do you think the results would be favourable, or just not worth doing?

hi casey i have a losi eight t rtr that i am going to race in new york which is mostly hard pack track what would be the first race upgrade u would recommendThe first thing you should consider upgrading would be the shock caps. The aluminum version can definitely take more abuse.
Maybe after that, consider going to a standard clutch setup like 2 aluminum shoes with silver springs and 2 composite shoes with gold springs. If you notice this setup is too aggressive, try going to gold springs on the aluminum shoes and green springs on the composite.

Casey, Hope all is well.
First off Krystal Burger takes the cake, however you cant get them unless you go south east on it. I concur on the frozen White Castle though. I have a box in the freezer right now LOL.
Anyways, Do you think HT Tucson will allow us to run the strike with the slash class. I am thinkning about picking one of these up.
Hi Casey
After talking to Darren Bloomfield, I ditched the front and rear smart diffs I was running at our local track, which is quite a loose dusty surface, and ran better, and then ran better still when I made some changes suggested by yourself i.e softer rear end, shorter rear links etc, and am well pleased with results.
I was going to sell the SD's, but October sees the start of the winter season, where we end up on the fuzzy felt (astro), and was thinking if they work better in higher grip situations, should I keep them for then?
If so, any recommendatios for set up on the astro ( I've seen there is a set up of Adam's for the buggy, but nothing for the truggy)
Casey Peck
09-06-2009, 02:49 PM
Hi Dish thanks
I think the Strike will be a perfect match for the slash and as long as there are some kind of gound rules I think the trucks will work just fine in a class together.
Casey Peck
09-06-2009, 02:50 PM
Plod IMO they work the best in low grip conditions. The Truggy on higer bite Astro will want thicker diff set ups as well, thicker shock oil and or little or no rebound in the shocks is where I would start

i got a quick question tho. My dad got a 8t 2.0 for his bday. we went out friday and he loved it, he just didnt change out some small screws so he was having stuff coming loose all night, but in all he got about 3-4 tanks ran.
today he tore it apart, was going to rebuild the diffs(fluids),shocks, and put on some upgrades he bought. Well he rebuilt the diff and put everything back together and the ring and pinion are really rough. Its smooth then about 1/4th of the turn is really rough and then it goes back to smooth. we think it will blow if he runs it so he is going to call horizion tuesday. Whats your opinion on the ring and pinion being rough so early. we have played with shims and nothing helped. Thanks

losi-racer That is nothing to really worry about. It will break in as you run the truck and become smoother. Trust me, its better to have them tight at the beginning and wear in then it is to have them free and then strip out because they are a little loose.
Every ring and pinion that I have had that is like that has been silky smooth after about 1/2 gallon of fuel through the car. Then after that they are money!

Hi Casey,
My front wheels are really ballooning up bad. I'm running the stock setup on the smart diff's for the front and center. I have the RC pro event coming up this weekend and want to get this resolved.
I saw some place that Adam Drake said he was only running two springs(.15) and was cutting them down 2.75 coils. He wasn't very specific and I could use some clarrification. What does this do, why does he do it, are you doing it? Also, I race each weekend and practice several times a week. What maintenance intervals are you using. Is there a detailed setup sheet some place? How do I get the center smart diff to lock up more? What is your setup? Instead of cutting the springs are there shorter ones. Thanks for the help.

Losi.......This seems to be a touchy subject but I do just as chuck suggested. I start them way tight. then re-check the mesh (by holding the outdrives and rocking the pinion gear) to feel the real mesh and re-shim when needed.
400......yes I run the cut .15 springs and shim on top of the gear cage to get the diff to have more lock up. You might like the std front diff better in this situation. Generally if you lack drive with the SD'S I would say there is enough traction to not warrant the use of them. I like them in the most slippery and blown out of track surfaces.
As soon as the diff looses that "thickness" feel to it I will re-greese. I fill them really full of smart diff greese.

Losi trust what he says...
A few months ago Chuck saved me from blowing a diff because I didn't know what I was doing.
Don't try to shim it in any special way to fix it. Just do the one shim on each side and let it break in. I learned the hard way but then Chuck pointed out what I was doing wrong

I am trying to sharpen my skills as much as possible before Nitrocross. I think it would be so much fun to get into one of the higher mains. I have been testing tires, servos ect. Also I have been working on my cornering and lines.
Hope to see you and other losi drivers do well. It's a lot of fun to watch you, Billy, Mike and Adam battle out against the other drivers. Hope to see you out at the Pit soon

Well this is an ask a pro thread so I better have a question... uuh um
Oh! How do hole shots/ grid irons compare to a tire like bowfiters. I have never tried a small pin tire. For the last series race I need to put in a solid run. Would tires like holeshots be good secret weapon? Also on a dry track like Nitrocross which would work better? What does the small pin do
Casey Peck
09-07-2009, 08:46 PM
yes Autie a small pin tire would be the one to choose when there is traction and you dont need the lug to flex for traction or help rotate the car. Think Cactus classic and taper pins or bk bars.......so yes if you need a run and the track is right for it go for the holeshots.

what tire is going to last the longest for dry track. i need tires next month for both states and nitro cross
Casey Peck

for truggy dry track at the Pit and SRS I would run jconcepts crosshairs yellow or holeshots m2. With a good stiff foam

X2 i was a little puzzles when i read that also....plz explain.
Casey Peck

when you cut the springs the cage sits further away from the center gear. Which will give the feeling of more "deadband" before lockup. Use small cut pieces of header card to shim in between the gasket and center gear. I cut a thin straight line about 1/8" wide and then cut 4 of them about 3/8" long for the size

sorry but i am lost on this?!!? Header card being like the top of a losi parts package (cardboard). I am not clear on were to place them.
Casey Peck
09-08-2009, 02:48 PM
I understand this is why this is usually not explained on the boards....But let me try
Yes header card like what is on top of the product. You will want to place this (actually glue it) to the cage where the gear bolts up to it. If you have yours apart it will make sence. I will try to get a picture this week.

Hey Casey I have two questions for you. Will all these set up tips also work for a brushless Truggy\Buggy or is the weight and power band difference large enough to need alittle different tuning.
Second question is are there plans to have an electric 1/8 scale class at some of the bigger races.
I know I could just ask you the next time I see you but this info may also help other people reading this thread.
Thanks dude. Glad to have you guys here to help us out.

What is racing in the Tucson area like? My mom moved to Tucson last year and I might bring my buggy next time i visit. I somewhat know my way around from the last time I was out to visit. What is involved in taking your rc stuf on a plane? I have only flown once and usually drive.

Well that is a funny story actually.................I was having one of my "dizzy spells" and was setting my buggy ride height to buggy front 27 and truggy rear which is 39!!!! man it was a tough night. I even kept checking thinking "something is wrong" then it was "well yep its right on 27 39" I even upped the rear oil because it felt so soft!!!!! not one of my best moments. Racing out here in Tucson is actually pretty good..there are 2 local nitro tracks and one electric indoor track. then you have the Pit and 4 others with in 3 hours of me. I use one of those plastic tubs with the buckles on either side(pretty common for guys traveling with rc stuff) used to able to get them at wallmart. I pack all of my support stuff ie; chargers, parts, tools etc in the tub for check in and carry on the buggy and radio. This way if you make it to the race you will at least have your buggy and radio to race(airport looses stuff all the time)

I would be willing to do that for you Integra if you want to come out. You will need tires since thay are the most expensive disposables for a race though. yes there is three 1/8 race rollers,
don't the kits usually have the best options that are available for the rtr's
all except engine and electrics which most guys have a personal favorite to try when they build a kit
Mr. Awsome
09-11-2009, 10:36 PM
by the way, when was the last kit released, cuz i really want to build a kit, i get bored easily and this seems like a good time consumer, i want something new, ive disabled my DT a few times and now im looking for a kit that would be excitig:):D
AutieBender
09-11-2009, 11:39 PM
The 2.0 comes in a race roller. The 2.0 drives a lot better and is just all around better. You still get to assemble your electronics, radio system, and engine with tuned pipe. If you like to wench then you can tear down the car and make sure every nut and bolt is shiny clean. The 2.0 race roller is definetly the way to go.
Casey Peck
09-12-2009, 01:26 AM
no official fix Autie. Means your car is getting a little more worn in.......my beater does this as well.
If you wanted to build a kit you could always try to find an origonal 8 and replace the 1.0 parts with 2.0 as you build it. Might spend a bit more but you could build it........

Quick question. I recently changed the original spring on the servo saver to the truggy spring. I have not had any problems until now. I broke the radio tray in half right by the switch.
The directions say to back off the nut 2 and 1/2 turns from all the way tight. Just to be safe I backed it off 3 and 1/2 turns. It broke on this setting.
I pulled everything off and adjusted the nut almost flush to the bottom. On this setting by hand I can see that the servo arm will now move with resistance.
Is this the right setting now.
Casey Peck
09-15-2009, 11:34 AM
should be a touch tighter than that. Did you change the plastics too? There was a change made to the trays to stop that from happening. It's possible that the tray was already stressed and just happened to fail at the time it did.

I did replace my center diff last weekend because it was starting to leak but it was not notching.
But I think my car is worn out because I snapped a dog bone in qualifying...

hey Casey are you refering to the "notching" in the diff cups or the cases ? ive got a ridiculous amount of fuel through my entire diff case...Not my cups....i went HD a long time ago and never looked back in truggy.... buggy i got a little over 6 gallons before the cups started to notch out on me....i think you need to clear up exactly what parts you are referring to.....thx bud.
AutieBender
09-16-2009, 08:49 AM
we are talking about the cups. or diff cases. The big case that the diff goes intois called a gearbox. Inside of the cup where the gears are wil actually start to notch out.
Casey Peck
09-16-2009, 09:22 AM
Actually I said they should be pretty bad after 5 gallons.....So there is no way 25 gallon diff cases are not wrecked!!!
I check mine everytime I have it down and replace when they start to notch.
Diff case's..... If you run on loamy surfaces I can see them lasting quite alot longer. The revised 2.0 ones are quite a bit better than the old ones. If you go to the HD diff cases you may never have to worry about them again.

i slapped them in truggy when they first came out....realized they were a lot heavier then the standard diff...but the fact remains you wont have to replace them forever as ive been through oh i dunno...20+ gallons on the same cups F+R SD in center now...but still the same case.

i would get 14 or 16....20 would be a little too thin if you ask me...ive seen lots of lipo's with really small gauge wire...but i would replace it with thicker stuff personally.....I use my reg as my extention out of the RX box....well you've seen my boxes...so you know.;)

and there ya have it. The bigger the better. I would just go ahead and get a heavy duty servo extension for a plane and use that. Basicly you just need to have a male end from the battery and a female end from the rx. Then just plug it in when ready. I personally do not like this way and use the good jr switch. I can say that I have never had one of those switches fail. Most people will just buy the cheep 5 dollar switch which looks the same but in reality has super weak contacts..

I understand this is why this is usually not explained on the boards....But let me try
Yes header card like what is on top of the product. You will want to place this (actually glue it) to the cage where the gear bolts up to it. If you have yours apart it will make sence. I will try to get a picture this week.
the header card from any and all losi parts is what I use.
I responded just did not get another question so I thought that was it :)

Aaron I have not. But I am thinking if its super rough you could run them to smooth out the steering and If you want super steering on a tight track with 180's you could run 2* less kickup and run the new caster blocks to get the caster back to where it was.

Dish.... Step Pins are generally good for super loose track conditions. They would probably be good at Paddocks or any other sandy type tracks. In silver they would not be too great at HT. If the price is right it would be worth giving them a try though. In silver they should last quite a long time. Their major down fall is that they want to make the car flip easy.

Ask away.

Ok cool. I understand. I can get them for $5.00 a pair brand new. $10.00 for a set is a steal but I am thinking it might be a waste of money. I was going to buy them for my son as I don't think he will know the difference.

Billy Fischer gets the credit here as well I have a few things different than he does but He is the one that got me thinking in the right direction. I am really happy with this set up though.
these are the changes from the roller set up
front
54piston std 42.5 wt oil 39mm ride height
Rear
56piston std 30 wt oil
camber link up on tower and all the way in on hub ( you will have to cut 1/8" off of each side of the tie rod, but it will still work for the std location)
hubs back 2.0mm sway bar 127mm droop 40mm ride height

possible Solution for ya Casey...Band it with Throttle bands.....they SNAP the lid shut when you let go of the Pull and will ensure it stays shut under extreme body flex or a rough tumble..also being on the opposite side as the spring's make them even better as its now holding down both sides. :) i also use them on my buggy tank for extra insurance.

Yes Reggie that is what I do as well. When the lid seal dries out and looks whitish you need to change it. No matter what you do to the spring it will still not seal very well when its like thathttp://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/Casey_Peck/tankspringspacer.jpg

Integra thanks for sharing, looks like that would get you through the weekend in a pinch. Can you open the lid far enough for a fuel gun with those bands on? looks like they might slip off the back. If you still have trouble after the spring is tightened up with the linkage collars check your cap seal.

No weekend pinch here....this is how i run ALL My tanks..ive even done some of buddy's mugen tanks with bands.........you can 100% open the tank enough to get a fuel gun in and you really dont even have to think about your pit man pressing with his finger on the lid...as i see that a lot to ensure the lid is closed....i tell my pitman to LET IT SLAP shut and its all good....i did have my old 1.0 tank seal take a dump after 2-3 year's of running...but once i slaped in the duel spring 2.0 tank the problem's went away...the bands are kept in place from the pressure nipple on the lid...also the sump a the bottom of the tank also keeps the bands where they need to be.

there the black latexish one's from walmart...brand name is goody...but i see alot of people posting the clear small one's for throttle bands....the black one's can be Stretched like easily 5X their size and you can actually tailor the holding power with Over stretching them....like my filter wrap deally.....those are the same bands but stretched so they don't pinch the life out of the filter and cause the edge's to poke out....i got a lot of little unique thing's i do to my gear that most think im crazy or going overkill....but w/e. :p
