Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone else is having trouble with gears breaking teeth off inside the ROSS gearbox? My first one stripped the 2nd day I owned my Ten-T. Foolishly I paid my LHS for the gear to repair that one. Since then 2 more gears have stripped and i've only ran 1.5 gallons of nitro thru it!
It's a shame that one of the biggest selling points of this truggy (ROSS) is such a poor design. If you take a look at the gears inside the ROSS unit they are plastic teeth fused onto metal cores. Why? Why? Why?

Still new to Nitro, but a few things I thought of.
Do you set the motor to BDC before starting.
Do you preheat the motor 1st start?
With that much fuel having been run, it seems like the motor should be broken in.
I stripped my 1st set while taking off, preheated motor, and it stalled, and never thought about it, just hit the button and stripped the gears. Tight motors can't be at tdc, either the override kicks in and shuts the system down, or the gears strip.

I believe you answered your own question, You have replaced 3 already, who makes money of them cheap parts that keep breaking?? LOSI, that way LOSI stay's in business selling replacement parts for shitty design.
Its a win/lose situation, We lose, and they keep winning.

I am not even through my first gallon and I just got done putting my third set of starter gears on today. (btw, losi just told me that the starter gears are on backorder now, they must be sending those things out almost every day)
I broke the engine in fully and didn't really have any problems for 3/4 of a gallon. I stripped the first set, got the replacements in and hit the button to start (with piston at BDC) and stripped the second set before the engine even got fuel into the carb.
I don't really know what to tell you as I am trying to figure out everything as well with this. Is your engine really hard to turn over at TDC even with the glow plug out? Mine is and I am not sure if it is supposed to be or not. I know that it should have a little bit of a pinch at the top, but I would think a finger on the flywheel would get it past that. It takes a screwdriver just like when the glow plug is in. The only reasons I am singling this out is because it doesn't seem like it should be that hard to spin when there is no compression building up in the engine and every time I strip a gear, the engine is at TDC.

Well you can add me to the stripped gear list. Mine happened today after running 7 or 8 tanks. I had just fueled and hit the button and got a whirling sound similar to that of a faulty OWB. The next time hit the button it tripped the protection circuit. I took off the body for a looksy and when I hit the the button you can see the ROSS motor bump a little like it's bound up. I was out with the fam so I just put it away, but I'm sure I will find gear teeth to be the cause of the bind. I've gotten two gallons through mine without anything except some OWB issues. Why my ROSS would just fail trying to start a well worn, hot engine is beyond me. It really pisses me off that the parts are on backorder. I've waited six months for good weather to run in and now my T is on the shelf! F'nA!

If anyone is interested there are some vendors selling gear sets on flea-bay. I just picked up 2 sets to have handy

What was the ebay search? I could only find complete ross units, not the LOSB5117 gear set. I searched under Losi Ten, and Losi Ross and the part number?
But I did find them in stock at Losiparts, Stormer and A Main (between 9 and 10.25), just waiting to see what breaks again, for a bigger order, shipping is a killer. And my last part order comes in tomorrow to get the little thing running again, but last time, I forgot the ross gears.

Has anybody done a side by side comparison of the gearsets in the EZ start and the ones in the ROSS?

I may take the ezstart off of my tmaxx and the ross off of the ten t and have a look at the gears together either tonight or tomorrow afternoon.
