This is a xxt conversion that a friend of mine made a few of in the 90's. We ran these at the Ranch pit shop and we had no problem beating the gtx's and rc10gt's. Here is my updated version getting ready to go out to revelation raceway in a few weeks.

From what I understand is that pops turned it down because he was just not looking to get into a gas truck at that point of time. But from what I understand Kinwald was testing it and it did make radio control magazine spy shot. So there is a little contradicting going on. So I do not know if it was cost effective or what the deal was since everthing was done with very high grade aluminum. But all I know is they turned down a good thing. The major design of a race car or truck is that the vehicle should be simple and quick to work on between heats. I can have this truck taken apart in 5 minutes. With the AD2 you have to take 6 or so flathead screws out just to get to the front servo. On this truck 2 4-40 x1/2 socketheads and lift up the brace and there is the servo.

WOW - does that bring back some memories!!!!!
Here in the Midwest we had the A Main conversions (not related to the current A Main Hobbies) which were done out of a shop in Overland Park KS (RC Motorsports). The original design was done by Rich Boomsma and Kunio Dudgion - a collaboration on the RC10T and the first viable gas truck anywhere. At that time, the Kyosho folks had a truck that could be hacked into racing submission but it was neither strong nor reliable.
The next A Main project was a gas conversion of the Losi LX-T - which was accomplished around 1990 or so. They raced these trucks at several of the larger west coast races in addition to the Kyosho Chalenge in Detroit, MI. - always doing well with them!
I never knew for sure how many of these conversion kits were produced - probably NOT over a couple of hundred - one of which lies safe and sound in my basement 'treasure chest'.
The original Losi Gas Truck (NXT?) was 'commissioned' by Horizon if my memory serves me correctly because, as Eric states, the folks at Losi were not interested in playing. The NXT was (in my opinion) not up to the standards of the orginal GT and faded into obscurity...... PLUS, it's FUGLY body didn't win it a lot of friends either!!!!! Not sure WHAT was up with that!

I remember the early days of 1/10th scale Nitro trucks...
The original Losi gas truck was the GTX... sold only through Horizon to the hobby shops and tracks... It did have a large almost bulbous body with a big tire looking donut in the back.. it was sort of like driving a parachute! Slowed you down a bit and gave you some hang time in the air! The biggest advantage is that it didn't break all the time like the GT did... you had to beef up a GT with RPM parts and hope you didn't strip a spur gear if a rock or dirt got up in between it and the chassis! I remember racing at the Ranch and a few other SoCal dirt tracks.. you would have at least one if not more GTs out of a race because of one of these constant problems. The NXT came out next.. only a few little changes, mainly in the rear end suspension.. shock tower and extended pivot blocks. The body it came with was very almost the extreme opposite look... squarish and much narrower.. it did fit on the GTX with no probs.. I ran my GTX well into the first era of the XXX-NT.. Though it was still competitive (nitro is a dirty class, lol), the XXX-NT could simply out turn a GTX/NXT pretty easy.. and the chassis itself was a little more beefy. With the GTX/NXT "thin" aluminum, you would end up bending it on the starter box without trying to..
Ah.. the good ol'days!

You are right the first gas truck Losi actually decided on building was the gtx for horizon. Notice that Losi sold the graphite parts for it later in Losi's own name which made me think they were going to make a version of the gtx very soon. The xxx-nt might be able to out turn the gtx and nxt but it could not out turn a esm xx-t conversion with xx steering. If anything they are equal. The ESM is much easier to drive than an xxx-nt. It handles more like a mf2. It also has a consistant brake system with no fade unlike the xxx-nt series. You are right nitro is a dirty class. I rememeber racing all night then do a complete tear down the following morning. You are right Jerome The good ol days. Wonder what Mike Bills, Randy Hamilton and Alan are doing now. I hear Ken Ishitani is working for Losi. Ken was the best.

I remember watching gas LX-Ts back in the day. Man I miss the days when 10th scale gas trucks were mega popular...........:(

Mega popular, but if you were having a bad day and couldn't get the tune right....... I still have my GTX, with a CZZ. One of these days I'll dust it off,,,, and my Savage, and my Nitro TC3..... Darn they're messy, but an electric just ain't got the smell, or the sound.

Us racers at the ranch pit shop loved the CZ-Z's we always had our stuff dialed in. True they are messy but that is just part of the racing we love.

I believe I was running the Dynamite engine at that time. And a bad day racing was still good!

A-main conversion ???? YOU MEAN ONE OF THESE??? LOL
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!
Yours is a bit nicer then mine though.... I just uncovered the box that it is in this evening....
BUT, the one that I'd really like to have is the Associated....... And predates the Losi version by about 2 - 3 years.
Since you're a SoCAL guy, I could guess that you purchased it at the Ranch???? One of the biggest problems A Main had was keeping the Ranch supplied!

I still envy that truck of yours!!!!!! IF I remember correctly, mine came from back east somewhere..... it's been run, is in decent shape and needs for me to spend a few days taking it apart and cleaning everything - THEN putting it back together!:D

So do a LOT of us Matt!!! I'm missin' it so much that the Missouri RC ProSeries is running a 1/10th scale TRUCK class this year - and I'm going to dig up my (otherbrand) 2 and run it just for the memories!!!!! Got a BRAND new Clint's Creations body that he's been buggin' me for several years to trim and mount!! Gas truck died around here before I got to run it....
how did he connect the engine to the axels, what did he use
The engine was connected to the spur gear (through a clutch system) which drove the wheels through a 3 gear transmission..... Engine placement was very similar to the mid motored electric conversions that are running rampant around this part of the world....

how'd he connect teh engine to the axels
He did not connect the engine to the axles. He is injection mold specialist so he made upright transmission cases that carried the standard Losi XX dif and topshaft and made his own center gear.
