FYI
Tried using diff oils in the smart diff to increase off power turn in. The silicone oil seems to increase the friction internally and does not free up the diff. It is crucial that you use the diff grease supplied and that you check the grease level frequently. Hope this helps.:o

hey thanks i didnt use any of the silicone grease it came with yet, said on package it was ready to install, havent had a chance to run it with the smart diff, should i use a lighter diff lube than what u would normaly use in the stock diffs

Nope you use the grease that comes with it.

No, use the grease that came with the diff. We are testing different grease types and viscosities to further adjust the smartdiffs. When you service your smartdiff, make sure and pack the grease in the diff cup. You can play with different spring combinations to delay the diff from locking up. Here is the smartdiff spring setup:
Spring wire diameter---------- Off-power turn in----------On-power drive
4 x .15mm (installed)--------- Neutral----------------------Very Aggressive
4 x .20mm --------------------- Neutral/Agressive----------Aggressive
4 x .25mm --------------------- Aggressive------------------Neutral/Aggressive
4 x .35mm --------------------- Very Aggressive------------Neutral

Hmm think I need to switch to 2.0 springs when I service my smartdiff.
One thing I'm confused about though. Does the buggy and truggy use the same tooth count on the ring gear?

Neobart- Both use a 43 ring gear, but they are different. The truck gear is black and the buggy gear is silver.

Thanks Adam. I also just noticed the outdrives are different. Are they not made of the same material, or are the truggy ones just treated differently?

Fellows i have stripped out two sets of smartdiff gears running stock set up on diff but i haven't been packing the grease in is that the reason for stripping the gears.Should i just pack it full every race weekend or what do yall suggest.

Without actually seeing the diff gears it is hard to say. When you open the diff up are the springs still intact and in place?

i have ran center smart diff all season with 4 15 springs (stock) i have only serviced it twice and have never had any problems. Maybe you have a bad diff case to cause two sets of gears to strip out.

Im running very little grease in mine enough to just coat the gears and have not had any problems.

RYNO 67,
I service my smartdiff after every day of racing. If your at a long event with time to spare you can service the smartdiff after every two qualifiers. If you are running the o-ring washers, you should remove them.

Thanks at this point ill try anything new diff case the diff is completely stock the way it came so i need to remove the o ring washers ?

OK, so by this chart if I were to run only 2 .15 springs in the center SD it would be even slower release on entry and lock up very quickly on throttle?
Is my reasoning correct? Trying to learn the theory. Thanks.

You're thinking correctly. The lighter the spring rates, the quicker it will lock up (similar to heavier oil in a standard diff).

LV Baja,
You can use the washers if you like. The washers actually preload or smash the o-rings slightly. This causes increased friction and will make the diff grease feel thicker.

Can some please help I've been running the center SD and since the install I've been getting a ballon afffect on the front tires. I was running the stock roller setup with 4-.15 spring problem. I then moved the back diff oil up to 5K same problem then moved too 2-.20 springs same problem. The front is still 7K should I drop too 5K

Your center smart diff may be improperly assembled. You should take it apart and make sure that the springs are properly seated in the recessed areas designed to hold them. Also, make sure you have it completely packed with grease. Fill it with grease, then assemble and turn it for several minutes, then take it apart again and repack it with more grease. Increasing the weight of oil in the rear diff will not fix the problem you're having. It has something to do with the center diff not transferring power evenly to the front and rear wheels.

Hey ya'll I just got my smartdiff yesterday, after I installed it and ran it for a little while I had grease slung everywhere. I took it out and opened it up, everything looked fine, so I put it back together, made sure everything was tight, reinstalled it and ran it some more. It still had some grease on the chassis but not as bad as before. Is this normal? Should I buy a gallon of grease and grease it daily? It looks to me if the grease is getting out that it would burn up some gear fairly fast. What ya'll think?
Thanks

There shouldn't be grease everywhere. A little might leak out as you're assembling the Smart Diff, but that's it. Make sure you have the gasket in between the diff housing and the spur gear. It's the same gasket that's used on the regular diff. If it can keep oil from leaking out, it should be able to keep grease from leaking out.

Has anyone tried to the different ramp plates? What do the 120 degree plates do? How do they react differently from the 90 degree plates?

What kind of grease is supplied with the smart diff's, is it silicone grease?

What about if I want a very aggressive off power and a very aggressive on power set up? What about the other ramp plates? Do you have a setup sheet for those. What are the different spring setups with the 120 degree plates? Also, have you found another grease that works? I don't mind repacking the diffs after every race weekend, however spending 5 dollars for a little grease tube gets expensive when I'm repacking four diffs each week. I'm thinking about trying auto grease from a can. Has anyone used that and does it work the same?

400units,
You don't need to replace the grease everyweek. You can add grease when you service the SM. If you like the off power turn in you can purchase the Team Losi Adjustable Front Hinge Pin Brace/Inserts[LOSA1754]. Try using the .5 up in the rear and 0 in the front. This will increase your turn in substantially. Regular auto grease is to viscous and will not allow your SM to free up. Hope this helps.

Draker1,
The Losi smart diff grease is not a silicone based grease. Silicone increases friction in differentials.

Adding grease would be fine, however the grease is normally all gone. With several hours of practice throughout the week and then race weekend, there is nothing left in the SD after the week is over. If it didn't fling out of the SD, where did it go? What about the other ramp plates?

Hi there, I have both front and center smart diff for buggy and was wondering what parts i would need to fit them into my new 8ight-T 2.0?
Thanks in advance

Under the questions and answer section, it says that we can use diff oil instead of grease. What diff oils did you try and how full did you fill the cup? I am going to experiment a little and would like your input. Were you running two or four springs? Did you have any of the springs cut down?
I just filled the center diff with 1,000 all the way up. I only have two .15 springs in it that are not cut down. I have a race tomorrow so I will report back my results.
If the diff doesn't unlock, I will try all four springs. If the diff doesn't lock up I will try a thinner oil, maybe 500 or something. I hope I am on the right direction.

Just finished my race weekend and the smart diffs worked perfectly with 1,000 wt oil. I couldn't tell if it had grease or oil. I ran my truggy with grease and my buggy with oil just to test the difference between the two. It engaged and released just like normal. I'm going to change my truggy over to oil and see if it feels the same too. By by grease.

If I can install only one SmartDiff in mt 8ight T 2.0, should it be the front one or the center one? They are quite expensive. I have read that the center one should be the first change, but what is your opinion? Does it really make that big a difference from the stock diff?

lomdel,
I would install one in the front if you need more off power turn in. Both the stock and smart diff are great and each can be tuned for your specific track(s). Hope this helps.

so what does the smart diff do?DOes it get rid of tuning with oil and use springs to tune instead?
