I'm trying to install a new front driveshaft. I cannot get the set screw out of the old center cv section. I decided to just buy a new diff side cup and replace the whole thing. Went to put the new cv end together and the set screw wouldn't tighten enough and is now stuck in the cv pin. Is there something I should have done? I dropped some oil on the threads but that didn't help.

I had a new front shaft as well and grabbed the parts from it. They went together just fine.

So the set set screw will not engage the cross pin to hold it all together and is stuck in the coupler? You can't get the set screw back out now? I wonder if there was an incomplete thread or some debris in the treads?

Can you get the set screw to go into the coupler apart from the rest of the CV joint?

Yup. Stuck halfway between in and out and wont engage the pin. I grabbed the same parts from my new front shaft and they were fine. Oddly the old rear one is stuck as well. I guess I'll have to buy the 3525 center cv rebuild kit to get some extras. It must have been an incomplete thread. Couple that with my brute force mentality and it's worthless now. Oh well.

Incomplete threads or even a burr can cause the screw to lock up. Always dry fit the parts first to make sure it all works. If it hits a snag there is something wrong. If you have a tap you can chase the threads. This is not a common problem but does show up every once in a while with mass produced parts.

Normally I would have done a dry fit but I was in a hurry. Car has been sitting in pieces on my bench for weeks so I was eager to get it done. I dry fit the second set...lesson learned. :)
