What's the word on a new 2wd buggy?

Will their be a update to Xcelorin S. To make it more competetive with the Tekin systems and other pro ESC's that are out? I'm talking programing like turbo features.

Hi Dustin,

I just started racing a XXX-4 this year, but I haven't been able to find any current set ups on the Losi site. What's your base set up and what type of track would it be for? I typically run on a smaller track with a loose dirt or loamy track surface.

JUSTWILL75 - we are always working on things, Chambers and I have been working hard on setups to get the 2wd as good as possible. No plans for a new 2wd. As far as the excleorin, the newest programming that can be downloaded from the Losi website is awesome. That is what Chambers, Truhe, Fischer and I run. I feel it has the best and most consistent braking of any speedcontrol out their, also with a great power band. Using a computer, the xcelorin has so many different program features with throttle curve, brake curve, drag brake, and all other basic functions. Haven't run a tekin system but compared to other top systems, I have found the xcelorin to have the best overall feel.

Zippy_91 - I dont know my whole xxx-4 setup off the top of my head so I will get it out tonight and post it for you tomorrow.

Chambers- haha u know it

Great thread.

btw. whats the advantages of running the xxx rear end vs the cr rear end. I'm still pretty close to the box setup and for the most parts its working ok. I've added the lead weight around the servo etc. My problem is a on power push. I've tried pretty much every tire for the track that i race on but it still doesnt turn in as hard as i would like. It has gotten a lil better but its a tad away from really good. I feel like if i could get the rear end to rotate a lil bit more around turns or basically get a lil more steering from the rear of the car if that makes since it would be good.

Basically what intial changes would i notice by switching.

rob martin- The xxx rear end with the bellcranks up front just make the car feel much more consistent. I think it jumps better and has more steering, but just the consisntency from lap to lap is the big thing for me.

hi i would like to know what a good kv for a truggy would be and also what battery would be good for a 20 minute main if possible

i am thinking of using a tekin 2250 kv Sensored system and maybe a losi 4c 14 v lipo or maybe the 18 volt lipo.

i want something close to a nitro motor as i only race my truggy.

to add i bought the losi convertion kit for my 2.0 truggy so is the gearing good?

thanks for looking at this

rc-guy - I actually have never driven an electric 1/8th scale.... You should ask Billy Fischer in the "Ask The Team" Forum. He is the 09 Silverstate champ in electric buggy so he should be able to answer any question you have.

I recommend a LOSI 2100kv with a 4S LiPo. To me 5S is a bit too much. If you consider a 5S you may want to back off on the higher kv motors.

With 2100kv and 4S i would recommend 45/15 to 16, 5S a 45/14-15, obviously a larger pinion for a bigger track and conversely a smaller pinon for a smaller track. If you go with the Tekin motor you will want to see their gearing recommendations.

Dustin, found your thread. Very cool. Wanted to thank you and Matt again for the setup help with Jason's XXX4 at Trackside for the Spektrum race. With all those changes I made the car looked totally different on the track. Jason really seemed to take to the way it performed. Being new to RC, your help was really appreciated and Jason really loves to drive.

It was great having you, Matt and Dakota at Trackside. I was impressed with your willingness to take the time to help with setups. You always seemed to have a smile on your face. Hope you enjoyed the event as much as it looked like you did.

I hope they get an easy way for you to post your setups. I would really like to get your setup sheets for the XXX4, XXX and XXXT the way you ran at trackside.

Hope to see you again soon, Keith and Jason.

I second that, You were all great to have, we couldn't have asked for better attitudes. We are at a disadvantage at Trackside, being they cater to the associated guys, and you were all anxious to help. Adding to it you winning truck and buggy shows them associated isn't the only way to go. Also the generosity was great, thanks for the tires. I'll be practicing this Saturday specifically to get my buggy to turn more to my liking. For 12 years old Dakota knows how to get around. I wish Andrew and I had half that talent. wish you were closer, it was a lot of fun, but hopefully you'll be back to defend your titles. That was great since Trackside seems to think Associated is the only manufacturer.

myrock- long VLA does what you said, makes the suspension softer. I never run long VLA except front of 2wd but it should create more traction. Its one of those things you just have to try and see what it does because it could react different at different types of tracks.

Joseph Shanks-In my 2wd I run 1/2oz n bulkhead, 1/2oz under servo arm, and 1/4oz on both sides of the servo. I run losi 5000mah batteries. xxxcr wing always. Pink taper fronts with stock foam, pink BK-bar with trinity bomb1 insert, and zipgrip2 for sauce

To Dustin, Matt or Dakotah...

When we were up at Scotty's for the Spektrum Race I know I talked with you guys about the LOSA2995 QC Hub adapters. What rear hub carriers did you end up going to with these and what driveshafts did you use? I was going to convert my truck to this setup before our indoor season starts on the 8th. Hope all is going well with you and have a happy new year!

Hi all,

Im new to the Elertic world of rc cars. So im really confused on motors and other small stuff of my new strike. Ive read other post and still havent came up totally sure of what Motor i should run. I hear Losi drivers and others saying Xcelorin, and there is a Sensored and non senosored.. and sizes. Im so confused. Im planning on running in the mod class at my local track. Im also looking to convert my tires to 1/8 scale buggy tires on the truck. Is that a good idea too? Since owning it for 3 days, I have no reverse and my diff cups and dog bones are shot. So i purchased the cv boots and looking to add the ball Diff, is that a good idea too?? Sorry for all the questions.

thanks jason

socal714guy- I would suggest a sensored brushless system, the power band is much smoother and easier to drive than that of a sensorless system. The Xcelorin sensored system is what I run in all my vehicles. For a motor I would suggest asking what most people are running at your track, but usually a 10.5 is plenty of power, but if you are looking for more go with an 8.5. Yes the cvd's and ball diff will make the car much better.

Thank you Dustin for the set up. Whats the diffrence between the outer hole and the inner hole on the bell crank? How does it make the truck react? Also running at Trackside my truck has too much steering and other guys told me it was the front tires i am using (Jconcepts bar codes) any tire do you think would be better? Is there any way to keep the rear of the truck more planted in the exit of turns? Thanks for all your help.

Myrock- thanks for all the support and kind words, it really means a lot and is what makes this hobby and traveling so much fun. hope all is well with you also! Have a good one.

Chris Wolfson- Thanks man! It was great meeting you and Eric Clark. Thanks for all the help at CRCRC, you and Eric are a class act and enjoyed pitting with you guys! keep in touch. Eric has my email adress, so get a hold of him if you have any questions or want to get a hold of me.

radar2819- the inner hole on the bellcrank makes the steering much smoother and helps prevent the truck from over steering. If you are not running the inner hole, that change will help a lot with your truck over steering. Also when you run the inner hole on the bell crank, you need .060 washer (2 gold losi washers) under the ballstud on the bellcrank and than .090 ( 3 gold losi washer) under the ballstud on the spindle for everything to work correctly. I ran pink taper pin fronts on my truck out there. I never tried the barcodes so I don't know how it will react compared to the pinks, but it is something worth trying.

hitordie010- back one page (page 4) is my standard setup for truck, that is the setup I have been running for over a year and haven't really changed it. I have tried different shocks but always go back to what I have posted. I don't really mess with shocks much, I keep fresh o-rings in to make sure they are working properly and really concentrate on tires and foam, which I think is 90% of setup. Tires always make the biggest difference in how a car feels.

nitrofish- the only diffs that I run in my 8 2.0 is 5,000 front, 7,000 center, and 2,000 rear. Thicker center diff will give you a more 4-wheel drive feeling and I think that is what you are looking for.

mojo.309- I have had that before and it usually means the sensor wire went bad, it happens from time to time when you plug and unplug a lot. So just replace sensor wire and should be good.

Hi Dustin, watched you run pretty well at cactus. I have a couple questions about your setup on your XXXT CR.
1: Is it possible you have your shock pistons listed on your setup from Trackside, listed backwards from front to rear? You have it listed as a 57 which is black in the front, and a 55 in the rear which is orange. It seems bouncy in the back and stiff in the front is why I ask.
2: it says .060 under the inner ball stud for the steering bell crank, then it says .090 for bump steer. That would be under the stud on spindle side of the same link correct? If so, why not just put .030 on the spindle and forget the .060 on the bell crank side?

Hope things are going well, and are you missing Matt now that he moved to Cali?

Hey Dustin, what were you, Matt and Dakotah running for tire dope at Trackside in December? I'm getting ready for Scotty's Short Course race in 2 weeks and looking to get some more bite. Thanks man!

Hi Gary, they were using Trinity Zip Grip 2. It works good on Losi pink tires, but I tried it on bar codes and they were beyond junk that run. Make sure you try it before aQual at the shoot out. See you there.

I thought that's what it was but wasn't sure. I've got a ton of tires to work with in a variety of compounds too from stock Slash, SC10 and Blitz tires to Goosebumps, HPI ATTK, M3 Calibers... I really, really, really want a Spec SC tire that's a premount to come soon :(

I have some homebrewed stuff that I ran in December and am just finding it to be slick on the softer compound tires.

I am not Dustin but the shocks are not a typo. This is basically the kit setup for the shocks. We have always run small pistions in the front and large pistions in the rear on the truck. Well at lesat as long as I can remember.

The .060 on the inner is to make sure the steering link does not hit the belcrank on full suspension compression. This is only needed if running the inner ackerman setting. If you run the outter ackerman setting you can run .000 inside and .030 on the outside to get the same bump steer setting. The truck almost always runs .030 more on the spindle.

Gary-- Check out www.sticky-kicks.com They make some great tire sauce. I would give red a try if you don't want to buy all three as it seems to be the most popular. I also run green when it is wet but red is kind of the default.

Sorry for the delay on getting back to everyone.

Dan Neer- I will get my 4wd setup on here soon

Dalton Shirk- My setups for truck and 2wd are the same as I have posted on here. 2wd setup is on page 5 and truck setup is on page 4.

MyRock- I have the pistons listed correct. if it is bouncy or too soft in the back go up in oil 2.5 - 5 weight. The reasons for .060 and .090 on spindle and bellcranks is to get the correct geometry and have all the steering components working correctly. Evertything is going well, still get to see Matty at all the big races, just not every week club racing!

E-Dog- My setup from the '09 nationals is the same as my 2wd setup on page 5 but with 57pistons and 20wt in the rear. I like the 56 piston with 25wt much better now though, so I would Try that

Tiight- I would start with the truck setup I have posted on page 4 of my thread. Pretty much what I run everywhere!

RcgaryK- My rock is correct on the traction additive, We were all using zipgrip2, awesome on pinks, I don't know how it will react on other compounds though.

Casper- Thanks homie, you got it covered!

Frank Root- Thanks man, it was fun, cars were awesome!

Hello,
I get the whole gear ratio thing, but here is where im confused, I have a XXX-Tmf2, i'm running the Kinetic system with a ballistic 13.5, and a thunder power 7.4v 65c 5300mah battery, a 2.4 radio and a JR 9100s steering servo, my trans ratio is 2.43 my spur is 86t and acording to the novak site I should be at a 8.5 ratio, give or take, that would mean I need to run a 25t pinion.?
I run on a short course with one triple jump and a single jump, won't that be to big of a pinion for a short course??? any sugestions on what pinion I should run, or change the spur, please let me know if the 25t is what I should run, im tring to get it all dialed inso I can be competitive.
Thanks for all your help,

chef- My last xxx-cr setup was the exact same as Truhe's national winning setup that is on the losi website.

Stadium xxx-tmf2- That gearing sounds correct for a 13.5, you have to gear those motors high, but just check the temps after 5 min. For SC I would start at about 86/22 and check temps the same way with 13.5

hey Dustin,

I was wondering, what was your shock setup on your xxx4 at Reedy? I bought two 22. and decided on running big bores on my XXX4. my initial run was way to stiff, Front: 57 piston, 32.5 wt, and silver springs Rear; 56 pistons, 27.7 wt, and white springs. I just used the same set up I was running in my small bore shocks. I guess it does not work the same. Also what are you doing to mount up on the shock tower. I noticed that the shock was leaning way to far to the front of the buggy, so I shimmed it back 3mm. by doing this it seemed to soften the suspension a lil. but not my much. By having the shocks more inline, maybe I am heading in the wrong directoin, but any help would be great, and congrats on having a good year, so far.

Avtar4987- I shim the shocks back a little so they are more inline. Shocks, Im running drilled 55 with 30 wt silver upfront, than 5-5-4-4, with 22 1/2 grey spring rear. 5-5-4-4 = two holes drilled to 55 and 2 holes drilled to 54

Hey dustin,

So I have your set up on my 22 and running at PRCR. Now every time, I come off the strait and cut in the first turn the inside wheel lifts off the ground. Now everyone here is running your set up, and I am the only one who is having this problem. I took the car completely apart, and found nothing out of whack. Everything is symmetrical and nothing is binding. Oh and its only the left front. Off the track if I push down the right rear shock tower, the left front wheel lifts a half an inch off the ground. If I push the left rear shock tower the right front tire is planted. Everyone I ask about it, tells me to try set up changes and change limiters. Only problem with that is that I am running the exact set up as everyone else and I am the only car to have this condition. Your help is highly appreciated.

But what are some other things, such as REAR ANTI SQUAT? Front Camber link and any washer under ballstud? Any Added weights?

It was really a thrill for him to hang with your mod in practice even if he was running his 4x4:). Your performance with a borrowed 4x4 with no setup changes and the same set of tires was very impressive. It says a lot for you and Losi in my opinion. Good luck and have fun at the worlds.

My xxx-sct is working very well at my track except for two large jumps where I have trouble keeping the thing from flying away. I have hacked up the body about as much as I can to allow air flow, but that has not worked. I have started stabbing the brake ai lift off and this seems to help but it is not the optimum landing position on one jump and I am losing shot of time there. I guess my next move is to start adding weight, but my concern is that I will loose the feel it has now. Do you have any suggestions that might make the change easier? Do you increase a certain amount of oil weight or spring rate per so many ounces of weight added? Or is there another way to make this body work... The truck is awesome with the body off. Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the long delay on the responses guys, I will be getting back to everyone each week from now on!

Jordankoza- I honestly do not know much about that vehicle, so your best bet would be to contact horizon support. The number is on the losi website. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Avtar- Yea there could be a lot of things causing that and is hard for me to know exactly what it is without looking at the car. Make sure the shocks are all the same length and everything is the same side to side. Than after that have someone like Shaun Dunlap take a look at the car and see if he can pinpoint the problem. Hope this helps!

Strikeback-- Yes the Frank Root xxx4 setup is what I run, and is a really good starting point for that vehicle.

Kghills- Its always good seing you guys and thanks again for all the kind words!

Racegun- the problem you are having is a tendency that all shortcourse trucks have. You just have to try and get the nose down as soon as you can after the truck gets in the air. I have been running my bodies with no holes cut in it and have found that to be the best in most cases. So I would try a body with no holes.

Chris Bowen- At the shortcourse race I was running the novak 550 4.5 but now I am running the new Orion vortex 550 4.5 which is very good. The setup I am running is posted on the losi website and is the "Milwaukee SC showdown setup."

One kiwi- The setup I ran in Sweden was the exact "ReedyRace" setup that is posted on Tlracing.com. I think our latest setup, which is from the nationals and also posted on the website, is better though. Just use 27 shock oil all the way around instead of 32.

I just recently started racing and was wondering how much timing you normally run. I am running a ballistic 550 4.5 turn motor on my sct. Right now I am running 20 degrees advance through the esc with the motor still in the neutral position. I was told you ran the same motor at Mike's in the short course showdown. I race at Mikes and was wondering if you had any recommendations.

Dustin Evans
11-14-2011, 11:35 AM
Rshockley- With the 550 motor I run the stock timing on the motor than add timing or boost through the speed control. I was using a 12 pinion with the stock spur gear. Every speed control is different on the settings for boost or timing, with the Orion r10 pro I have boost timing and turbo timing set at 15 out of 20. I would just gear it at 12 and add timing through the speed control until it feels good and keep an eye on the temperatures of the speedo and motor.

What adjustments are yall doing if any to the wing on the 22? I just got my buggy the other day and am still trying to figure out all the adjustments that are able to be made. I have never raced buggies before but it has been fun so far. Probably going to start out with your reedy race setup and go from there.

Dustin Evans
01-01-2012, 12:14 PM
Rshockley- The main thing to do with the wing is to mount it all the way forward when running the stock wing. You can also try different wings as they do make the car react different. 2wd is a lot of fun!
