Mr. Hodge..
Anything in development for the Type-R?
I am the only person running it at my track. The majority of members run X-ray, I'm known as the guy who runs a loosie and I hate it. I get no respect.
Hopefully I can earn it this year..
An additional question: What body do you recommend using on a bumpy carpet track?
Our indoor season ended in April and I switched to a stratus just prior to the end from an HPI import. I know that it's not the best body to begin with, but I wanted to try something different. After switching though, I noticed a difference and liked the results. I am wondering if I should make another change.
Thanks

Hi guys,
Just to let you know. My son and I are the only ones in our club that run Losi's and up till we went Brushless, we had the fastest cars there.
As an engineer, I just had to have the JRXS.

Hello,
I have been racing a Type R now for more then 1 year with great results as you can see here
http://www.gtmrcclub.be/files/Klassement-2009.pdf
i'm patrickVn running modified with a 5.5 turn brusless on carpet with Orion Lipo's.
Before the Losi i had 3 Xrays and 1 Team Asso TC3 with which i raced many years.
Now every car has strong points and weak points.
Strong points for the Type R are certainly:
+ quality
+ balance
+ ease of handling on any kind of track
+ center position of Lipo
+ parts availability (if you don't mind shopping on internet)
+ driving pleasure
....
However there are a few points that could be made better:
1. the diffs are not good
You have to rebuild them after every race on carpet if you want to keep them perfect. Mine feel gritty after two races and certainly not smooth. I have replaced everything already: bearings, pressure bearing, diff ball's... and it keeps coming back. Maybe look at xray for this one because with an xray diff i could race for one month and it still felt perfect.
2. the RCD en LCD
For the RCD's the 4-40x3/32" screw always comes loose no matter how much thread lock you use.
Same for the LCD's where the pin's also come out.
For the LCD coupler the holes are too close to the edges so they are not that strong.
Losi also uses shring tubing to keep both the RCD en LCD together but how can you buy this thick shring tubing seperate ???
3. the top shaft drive pulleys are too close together
It looks like the distance between the drive pulleys on the top shaft were designed specifically with Orion 4800 Lipo in mind. That mean's if you want to use a Lipo that is a little bit wider you have to make changes because you don't have room enough.
4. the front upper arm with the rod end is too long
I would like to be able to make it shorter so i can make more camber on the wheel
I would like to underline that this is all constructive critisism. I love my Losi and if i have to buy another car tomorrow it will be the same again.
But if Losi could upgrade these 4 points then they would have the perfect car in my eyes.

1. I go months without replacing parts in diffs. Just clean and grease them every week or so. However this is racing the spec classes and not modified, I would see where racing modified would make diffs explode but all cars should be very similar. I have modded a diff pulley to hold a few more balls. I haven't tried it yet but it if works well for me I'll post some pics up. I'm not sure if too much material was removed making it too week. I did this so I could run a slightly looser rear diff without generating additional slip.
2. Any shrink wrap seems to work well. I use some stuff from the local tool supply store.
3. I agree, although this can easily be fixed with an after market part.
4. Tried the front camber link modification? It get's ride of the front JR linkage and replaces it with a standard camber upper camber link. It gives plenty of camber gain.

Hello,
However there are a few points that could be made better:
good going mate, here in USA, we found solutions to make the "R" perfect for your eyes.
1. the diffs are not good
You have to rebuild them after every race on carpet if you want to keep them perfect. Mine feel gritty after two races and certainly not smooth. I have replaced everything already: bearings, pressure bearing, diff ball's... and it keeps coming back. >>>>> do D ring mod and order a Thrust BB from http://www.mcmaster.com/#7806k53/=3e62qr I think that s the right one, any one correct me if I m wrong (on anything!:D) anyway that made my diff whole lot better.
2. the RCD en LCD
For the RCD's the 4-40x3/32" screw always comes loose no matter how much thread lock you use.
Same for the LCD's where the pin's also come out.
For the LCD coupler the holes are too close to the edges so they are not that strong.
Losi also uses shring tubing to keep both the RCD en LCD together but how can you buy this thick shring tubing seperate ???
>>>>> do not use those set screws, shrink wrap them with grease filled inside, file down that slot and a hole in LCD time to time, re lube shrink wrap again. I got same LCD, RCD for over 1 season still looking good, be sure to use a "right length" pin on LCD, one that made for a axle hub is little short and that will fall out.
the replacement shrink wrap is 15mm in diameter, if you can'f find them PM me I'll mail you a package at cost. ($5 USD should be enough for package + stamps.)
3. the top shaft drive pulleys are too close together
It looks like the distance between the drive pulleys on the top shaft were designed specifically with Orion 4800 Lipo in mind. That mean's if you want to use a Lipo that is a little bit wider you have to make changes because you don't have room enough.

4. the front upper arm with the rod end is too long
I would like to be able to make it shorter so i can make more camber on the wheel

good going mate, here in USA, we found solutions to make the "R" perfect for your eyes.
----> great tips and i will certainly put them to good use :-)1. the diffs are not good
You have to rebuild them after every race on carpet if you want to keep them perfect. Mine feel gritty after two races and certainly not smooth. I have replaced everything already: bearings, pressure bearing, diff ball's... and it keeps coming back. ----> can you explain more what you mean with D ring mod ?
thrust BB looks good, right now i'm using a Corally thrust bearing which is already
better quality but still no good diffs
so first would like to try your D ring mod and if this doesn't help then i will order
the BB you suggest
2. the RCD en LCD
For the RCD's the 4-40x3/32" screw always comes loose no matter how much thread lock you use.
Same for the LCD's where the pin's also come out.
For the LCD coupler the holes are too close to the edges so they are not that strong.

I got same LCD, RCD for over 1 season still looking good, be sure to use a "right length" pin on LCD, one that made for a axle hub is little short and that will fall out.
-------> i'm working on a mod to fix this too with different pins, different set screws and something to replace the shrink tubing. Will test it next thursday but i think it will fix this problem.
the replacement shrink wrap is 15mm in diameter, if you can'f find them PM me I'll mail you a package at cost. ($5 USD should be enough for package + stamps.)
-------> i think i will have this covered but thanks for the offer to help, greatly appreciated3. the top shaft drive pulleys are too close together

----------> have just ordered some zippy lipo's and i will do a mod on them to make them fit :-)

Todd,
Those of us that are running brushless motors, need very small Spur gears. I am using the Losi Dual Slipper Spur gears and modifying them to fit. These gears are so close to the correct size and shape that only a small change to the mold would be needed to make them as an option for drivers running brushless motors.
I don't suppose that Losi would consider making such parts available in the future.

With the newest generation of brushless speedo's (or software if you have a Tekin, GS, or SpeedPassion) I've found that the spur and pinion sizes have kinda gone back to "normal". Right now I'm running ~5.4 FDR with a 115 spur and 39pinion. My son's car has a 120 spur and 42 pinion.

I run 21.5 all the way up to a 4.5 sometimes. I try to race different classes, but i mainly run 13.5 and 10.5. 17.5 was alot of fun, it was slow but I really had to pay attention to car setup and my driving lines, it's funny but my 13.5 lap times were better after driving 17.5 for a while!!
I also have an adapter that will allow you run any spur you want:

WOW
Thank you for your straight forward answer, that kinda showing us where type-R stands at horizon.
It has more to do with production costs. My guess is that a vast abundance of parts have been made to keep costs in check.
But when you think about it, the car is competitive. It does't need much to get it going, plus the design is great. The feature I love the most is have the ability to change gearing real fast, specially when switching to faster motors. Don't need a second car for this because of having to change the spur gear.
Most important thing is that the part support continue to flow and I will run this car as long as I can.

I use that spur gear adaptor/layshaft because it makes choosing gears for the 17.5 and 21.5 motors easier and secondly it spaces the pulleys out a touch wider which makes room for the square case lipo battery packs. I've got about 2000 laps on the this layshaft and haven't had any issues with it.
Will be hitting the asphalt for the first time with the car this weekend. Been running alot of rubber tire on carpet. Perhaps the setup will transfer with just a few changes.

The Xray weights fit nicely. I was tempted to do up some weights but honestly with the world moving towards lipo it's only a matter of time before the weight rules reflect it more so than they do today.
I love this car, it was way ahead of its time and I am only now discovering the real potential it has. While we work hard at aftermarket parts the car is quite potent out of the box period.
I've even tried mounting everything on the opposite side (servo diffs belts etc) just to see if i could .. and guess what haha you can! Wouldn't' suggest it but you can :).

The Lipo in my sons one is light enough that I had to put a lot of weights in his car, but I use a Reedy 5000 35C pack and needed no weights at all.
When my son and I first started running the JRXS's at our club we really cleaned up. Funny how you can win race after race and the others upgrade their cars, but dont even consider going Losi.

There is more Type-R's now at the local track than any other car. I started running it about a year ago and and people have been slowly converting over. We have developed a setup that's easy to drive for new guys and then they start migrating to a more aggressive setup over time as their skills develop.

Good morning fellow Losi friends
I drove a typre since 2 years, after a long series of X cars..
Still believing that is an excellent car. A good contender, straight out the box.
Good to mention that, here in Italy, we race a bit in a nitro fashion, i.e mod brushless (3.5-4), with lipo and foam on asphalt.
Kind of extreme for all the mechanical parts of the car.
The type has shown to be a good weapon even for "john doe" driver like me...;)
Well, after the good words....
A strange issue: I've a crash (happens...) nitro circuit, fast turn, at almost 90kmh (bl 4 and lipo...) and the chassis said he was history...
Got a new one.
Race day. I was unable, despite the very same setup, to match my lap times. No matter what.
Puzzled, at home, I check my old chassis. I've 2 chassis (season 2008 and the crashed 2009) both are 2.7mm.
The last one is 3.1mm. Didn't notice it when assembly, but make a lot of difference at the track.
Any comment?

More than likely it was a running change to the car to make it better. I just started driving the car about 3 weeks ago. Its has been real good with the stock setup out of the box for carpet. The car will be stiffer with the thicker carbon so check the new kit setup on the site and start there. I am still learning the car I will help as much as I can.

Well...
after reading some of the posts. I have to just say... Thank You Losi for the JRXS Type-R!
Please keep supporting us private racers with parts and availability.
Please consider possibly making "hop-up" parts for the car, sort of the Tamiya motto. Like an updated layshaft.. or lighter and improved diffs. I would buy them!
I love mine... people at my track went to Xrays and Tamiyas.. spending over $500 on kits.. in the meantime, my LHS is blowing out the Type Rs.. soon to be proud owner of a second one.

Guys, I'm looking for some advice here.
I'm looking to purchase an new touring car to be racing indoors this winter on rubber tires, and got a few quick questions.
My first question is durability. normall I wouldn't ask about this in a Losi vehicle, however I bought a strike, and I don't know who or what dropped the ball there. However every pat on the truck is cheap garbage, is the Type R this way?
I currently use a Common Sense hard case 5200 LiPo will this fit between the drive pulleys?
What are these diff mods that everyone seems to do? does someone have a link to instructions?
Normally I race AE vehicles, then I went out on a limb and got a Strike. After that has let me down I don't know if I want to invest $750 into another Strike. While I still have an RTR TC3 from 7-8 years ago, and still run 3rd at my LHS. To be honest I am scared to spend the money on a Losi, when I know from the track the TC5 wont have these issues.

Hmmmm...after reading some of the posts on this thread i see alot of positive comments that this car is competitive. I came back to racing a couple of years ago, primarily offroad. I was a competitive onroad racer my whole life but have enjoyed offroad the most as of late.
I remember i learnt to drive by racing 1/12 and later touring car and applied what i learned to offroad. I think it's time to dive back into the onroad scene and since i recently switched back to Losi in offroad...i'd like to remain Losi thru and thru.
As one guy mentioned...these cars are readily available at a good price compared to the recent releases from Tamiya and Xray. I think i might just try one! :D

The price on these things just dropped to under $200. It sounds like they are done with the line to me, seeing as how they always lower the price on something before the ditch it. Otherwise that priceline doesn't budge for the life of the vehicle.:D

If it has been Discontinued, how much longer will parts be available for the car??

indoor season ended in April, and I changed the fog just before the end of the import HPI. I know that is not the best way to experience at first, but I wanted to try something different. After the transition, though, I noticed a difference and gave the results. I wonder if I should make another change.

Спасибо за объяснение, чем проще, тем лучше…
Greetings all!!
I am from South Africa and I bought a Team Losi Racing JRXS Type R with hop-ups and spares. It is unbuilt.... I am unable to find the time to run on-road. Is anybody interested in buying the touring car from me?
Just the chassis. I can also be contacted on garys@gwsanalysis.com
Thanks Gary

Still a fantastic car, it's really a shame they aren't being sold or developed anymore by TLR. I love both of mine... they are fantastic spec class touring cars.

Hi,
I intend to drive my JRXS-R's untill I totally cant keep them running. Parts are getting almost impossible to buy.
The first part that I am running out of are the belts. Does anyone know where I can buy belts that will fit the type R?

Losi will continue to support this car for a while, I'm guessing. I have not had any issues buying any parts for the car online. Lots of online places still carry most of the parts line for this car. Though, I picked up a spare used roller to use as parts, too... it was just too cheap and easy to do in order to have everything on the car instantly.
Losi Parts House has both belts in stock:
