Hi Everyone,

I would like to get into RC and am really interested in the Losi 8ight truggy after watching some at the track. I have done a lot of research online and am getting more familiar with the RC's and now I am ready to buy. I don't know if I should get a RTR or buy a roller and build it up. Is it more cost effective to buy the RTR? Being my first car I understand that it is more about the driver than the car, but If the roller is not a great deal more expensive I would rather spend a little extra for better quality. I am very mechanically inclined and would definately enjoy piecing a truggy together...I just wouln't know what to get! Thoughts?

Thanks,
-Scott

From what I gather the differences in the RTR and the Race Roller are very few. Obviously the chassis and shock towers. The Roller has aluminum shock caps and different shock shafts. The Roller uses 30 wt in them as opposed to 35 in the RTR and the Race Roller uses 2000 wt fluid in the rear and the RTR uses 3000. If there are any other differences, please feel free to correct me. I went with the RTR since I needed a DSM controller anyway which would have cost me 250 alone and JR servos are great IMO. Another 100 bucks for a starter box. Now your talkin over 1000 bucks!!! The RTR is a great place to start...and the hop ups can come later. Just broke mine in today and I'm happy so far!!:D

I have the RTR buggy and I will tell you it's a fast buggy and has a ton of power but no run time which is bad in 1/8th scale racing. I don't know if the truggy compares but my guess is if you buy the RTR the only thing you will hate is your run time if you plan to race a whole lot. But to buy the RTR you can put all race roller components on it and still be roughly $300 under roller price and that would buy a good engine.

i have the buggy and i have had kits before, and i got out of the sport for awhile, and just got back into it. i just purchased the RTR buggy broke it in and i absolutely love it. alot of the pros' from losi at my track have also been running that same engine, just changing the pipe, to the losi re10, and they are faster than anyone there with the rtr enging. the only thing i have went through on mine is throttle servo. other than that i have ran 2 gallons through it and its running like a champ! But i do understand about spending smart money, but i think losi has definitely put a lot of rr into this and its proven. one nice thing since you dont have any gear is that youll get a starter box which i believe is fine, and a nice radio. so later if you get a kit, youll only need the chassis. Good luck! and glad your in the sport now. have fun!!

You might want to look at that parts/price list again. ;)

I did look.
8ight B 2.0 Roller - $650
DX3S System - $250
Servos- $60
Motor and Pipe - $225
Starter Box - $85
Starter Box Batteries - $60
Receiver Pack - $35

8ight B 2.0 RTR - $700
Race Roller Shock Towers and Chassis - $125
Race Roller Shocks - $80
4 shoe clutch - $40

For a total difference of $420 for the same car. You can buy a Novarossi plus 4 and pipe for that. So if you buy the RTR pull the motor and pipe and sell it that makes you having $500 left over to buy a good motor and pipe.

60$ won't even buy you one decent servo. That number needs to be 180$ at least. :)

Started with the 1.0 buggy and learned so quickly that even decent servos don't last long when your not careful.. incorrect EPA has claimed way to many servos, ruining many race attempts... I've slapped in the lipo and "metal case" jr's since but i'm so careful with the **** EPA... Not a cheap fix..

Hello Scott,
I purchased an 8ight-T 2.0 RTR at Pegasus hobbies in July for $649.00.
added a turbo button for $ 20.00.
also added HITEC ultra torque digital steering servo $ 80.00.
Team Losi RE-10 tuned pipe $ 69.00.

So to me the RTR with less than $200.00 in upgrades on 30% nitro has me running strong.

Give the motor another couple gallons it wont keep a tune. The Dsm is the only part of the RTR that is worth anything. I started with a RTR in Sept. It is now November and buy the end of the weekend it will be totally converted to a RR with a Werks B5 motor. It was a huge waste of money to go RTR. Go RR get good servos , remote of your choice, motor of your choice and in the long run youll save big bucks. especially if you have any intentions to race it. As a basher the RTR is fine, but being race ready is a joke and in my opinion false advertisement. Maybe one race but thats it.

There are a lot of rollers and kits on ebay for 200-300.

Would it be a good idea to get one of those and put it together?

Is there a build thread anywhere that I could reference or a list of good/bad parts to buy if i decide to piece a car together?

I have been racing on and off for 20 years so i am by no means a newbie or a basher. I picked up an RTR last week because i am selling all my electric stuff and i just dont have $1500 cash to build a RR. I dont see what is wrong with the radio in fact i dont care if it makes me a geek but it was cool to be able to look down and see my engine temp and get warnings when my RX battery was getting low. Of course i will be replacing servos down the road but for know they are fine. Truth is if i get to the track once a month i am lucky so they may last me a year! BY the way i picked up mine for $750 including a set of AKA's a gallon of fuel and a couple other spare parts thanks to Airland hobbies moving sale!

Servos are still good. Bout 1.5 to 2 gallons through it. All track time and all is good. Except for the shock standoff I replaced after bein a lil rough with it. Has Roller chassis , towers, and shock caps now. I also have a turbo head, RE10 pipe, and Pro Line Calibers waiting to be put on. Also I grabbed a JR 8711 for the steering for when the throttle goes. But as I said absolutely no probs for me so far. Could cry about the 3300T getting less range than the SR300 but I won't.;)

Yea i bought a RTR last fall and didnt get to really race it and with losi offering the rebate with the RR i went and bought one so i just swaped over the raido tray and put in a .21 motor. So now i am slowly getting spare parts that i might need for race day. I can always canibalize my RTR for parts in a pinch.
I think that the only thing wrong with the RTR is the bump box and the belt breaking. Mine broke and i went and bought a new box since the losi belts are back ordered.
I havent replaced my throttle servo yet but i did replace the steering witha hitech 5645. Has anyone used the optional metal servo saver bell?
